Good player to have. A good ball winner in the DM midfield role which is what United lack currently and good at ball retention and keeping possession in DM and when dropping in as a 3rd CB in an attacking move.
Can he play the "Carrick-like" passes? No. However, can he be trained to play that way? Yes. Will take time and patience in order to do that. I feel if he moves to United, give him a year or two and he could have a similar infleunce and quality that Carrick has on the ball and maybe more with his ball winning ability. But that's with the right system, style and coaching to do so.
The price would be the problem though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jose likes a DM or 2 though. Killer Carrick passes is not what he would be looking for or getting with Dier He'd be getting an Ivanovic-type who can play in several key defensive positions.
Diers passing is certainly good enough to play the DM role where he does not need to be splitting defences

How many times have United thrown Fellaini up top compared to Liverpool with their CB's? I may have only seen it once or twice with Liverpool.
Also, United pumped more long balls into that Liverpool box at the 1-1 draw at OT than Liverpool have all season.
Ali and Kane are too good to stay at Spurs for much longer if they continue to fail in every competition.
Players like that want to retire with some medals and trophies, not 2nd place finishes and telling their grand kids how they did really well considering their club spent less money than others.
We've been shiiit but picked up an FA Cup, League cup and possibly a Europa League too.
Only a matter of time.

You've almost proven why many people brand United as long ball specialists in one comment there.
Saying your style is far from exciting, so nobody watches you. Hence why there would be a lack of knowledge with United.
The fact still remains if your style is far from exciting, you either knock long balls here, there and every where or you don't keep possession.
the bottom line is that if anyone wants to buy any of our players who we do not actively want to sell, then they will be taken to the cleaners. we are talking stupid fees.
world record fees and then come.
alli and kane will eventually go, but not after we have fleeced some mugs for well over 100 mill for each.
they quite simply aint good enough to spend that kind of money on.... neither are world class.
"The fact still remains if your style is far from exciting, you either knock long balls here, there and every where or you don't keep possession."
Our possession statistics are up there with anybody else this season. We've just struggled with finishing and breaking down teams who park the bus.
Granted in the big games we have parked the bus ourselves a couple of times, not something I want to see but that's part and parcel of the manager in place.
I'm one of Jose's biggest critics on here.
Oh I see, your one of Jose's biggest critics so that must mean when your being positive about him, your right.
It gets very tedious watching possession as well as ong balls. The most exciting styles are direct styles for me. Keeping possession is usually a good tactic for making sure you don't lose games and maybe sneaking wins, but when you don't create, it makes no odds.
possession is nonsense nowadays means fack all. look at chelsea, i haven't seen the stats but out of the top 6 they probably have the lowest average possession..and they're the best team in the country
Leicester last season also the best example. Direct football wins games when you have the quality of finishing going forward.
Dier is a very good player. People don't watch him enough if they think he can't pass... his long passing range is fantastic. Not so good at those penetrative ground passes but he's still good at them.
