As per the NIP, NI is being *treated* (for goods etc) as an EU member state. The UK has chosen to leave the EU. Ergo border checks on goods are required.

Whether you believe they are disproportionate or not, this is the relationship the UK government wanted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Therein lies the nub.

The relationship “we” wanted was as above. Proportionality makes sense. What we have is not proportional.

In any agreement if the detail in practice prevents one side from operating properly or reasonably or becomes so onerous your try and discuss the issues. Inevitably of the other side just keeps saying “tough”, you walk away.

It seems to me that many who want a partnership with the EU seem quite content to revel in the deterioration lower to such an extent that may see their worst case scenario of no deal come true.

I happen to think that despite many on here repeating the mantra “this is what you voted for, suck it up” either finding out that a compromise will be reached by pragmatism from both sides or we do walk away.

The notion that the U.K. government will just back down is simply baseless.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are solutions which have been rejected by the Government, so unsure what you expect the EU to do here?

A SPS agreement based on the Swiss model was proposed. VAT proposals were also rejected. Customs, trusted trader (groupage has helped larger consignments by the likes of M&S, Tesco) were also rejected.

You call for pragmatism but little has been evidenced by the UKGov. And unfortunately the #10 briefings (placing the blame on the EU) has been swallowed by sections of the UK press.

For info BBC NI's John Campbell is probably the most informed journalist in regards to the NIP.

Dr Anna Jerzewska is also probably the foremost customs expert I'm aware of for info on customs facilitation in respect of the NIP.

They were rejected because they were “unacceptable”. Whether they are revisited now that the temperature is increased remains to be seen

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Leave the UK
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What? As in hand it over to the EU or to become part of a United Ireland?

Genuinely have no idea by what she means other than sheiting on NI.

I don’t think it’s a case of handing it over. Unless I’m missing something.

Regretfully this is all playing out under the backdrop of Stormont on the brink of collapse.

Foster resigns this morning giving the Executive seven days to appoint a first/deputy first minister.

SF will not nominate a DFM unless the DUP sign up for an Irish Language Act (which was promised under the new decade new approach agreement). Poots (this morning) has refused to guarantee.

That’s a mess of mostly it’s own making. Has always been a very fragile “truce”.

Number of times I’ve been sat with someone before or after a game and that comes on and they’re “what a lovely tune. What’s it about?”

Erm
