OK so been reading the comments since I made the comment a few hours ago, interesting debate, here's how I see white privilege, just my own view and sorry if this gets long I'm the guts of a bottle of red deep so at optimum listen to me mode
It's a western thing, it can't not be as it specifically realates to western society which was built by white people in their image.
So you've got to first look at how the west was built, and why so many andvances in medicene, technology, science in general have come from the west. The ability to actually do this stems from wealth, the very notion of a scientist exists in a place where it has the ability to be a thing, like if all you're doing is living day to day how can you create the environment where someone csn spend money on research, its not going to happen.
So the west's wealth is built off the back of colonisation, Europe went to particularly Africa and helped itself through subjugation of the native people, natural resources were taken back and therefore the west gave itself the opportunity and environment to thrive, this led to the industrial revolution where really this all begins.
So now the west is thriving and really the leaders in the modern world, they've done this through subjugation and now are building the modern Western world, the key point here is its being built in a mindset where the white man is king and the one building it, other races have been used and abused to create this situation.
So we in the west live in this world, that was built by white men, the non white people were seen as subordinate when it was being built and our modern society reflects this.
The idea that one race is superior is simply not true, there's countless examples but one that's always stuck with me is a native American lad who read a simple math text book and from this was able to write the most complex mathamatical equations based off just basic math.
So we exist in a world that is shaped by white people, built for white people off the backs of non whites. This is where white privilege comes from. We're inherently designed to see the west through a white lens, if the world we live in originally was created through subjugation then its not a stretch to suggest the white man has a leg up, the very institutions we live by today are fundamentaly designed for the white man and this keeps the non white person down.
Things are changing now, as a species we're more civilised, subjugation isn't accepted and non white people in the west are finding their voice. But we still have the legacy of how our world was built and the prejudices that come with that.
This in essence is white privilege.
TBAB you're right but what you're describing is class and how lower class white people are also suffering through subjugation by the upper class.
You could describe this as upper or middle class privilege, its essentially another form of privilege.
And that's why I have a real issue with the tory party and particularly the poor voting for them, the tory party do not help the poor, they're a party to serve the wealthy.

Privilege doesn't determine social status. It just enables it. A lazy white guy will still be poor even though it would be easier for them on paper to not be poor, privilege must be exploited, it doesn't fall on your lap.

OK so been reading the comments since I made the comment a few hours ago, interesting debate, here's how I see white privilege, just my own view and sorry if this gets long I'm the guts of a bottle of red deep so at optimum listen to me mode
It's a western thing, it can't not be as it specifically realates to western society which was built by white people in their image.
So you've got to first look at how the west was built, and why so many andvances in medicene, technology, science in general have come from the west. The ability to actually do this stems from wealth, the very notion of a scientist exists in a place where it has the ability to be a thing, like if all you're doing is living day to day how can you create the environment where someone csn spend money on research, its not going to happen.
So the west's wealth is built off the back of colonisation, Europe went to particularly Africa and helped itself through subjugation of the native people, natural resources were taken back and therefore the west gave itself the opportunity and environment to thrive, this led to the industrial revolution where really this all begins.
So now the west is thriving and really the leaders in the modern world, they've done this through subjugation and now are building the modern Western world, the key point here is its being built in a mindset where the white man is king and the one building it, other races have been used and abused to create this situation.
So we in the west live in this world, that was built by white men, the non white people were seen as subordinate when it was being built and our modern society reflects this.
The idea that one race is superior is simply not true, there's countless examples but one that's always stuck with me is a native American lad who read a simple math text book and from this was able to write the most complex mathamatical equations based off just basic math.
So we exist in a world that is shaped by white people, built for white people off the backs of non whites. This is where white privilege comes from. We're inherently designed to see the west through a white lens, if the world we live in originally was created through subjugation then its not a stretch to suggest the white man has a leg up, the very institutions we live by today are fundamentaly designed for the white man and this keeps the non white person down.
Things are changing now, as a species we're more civilised, subjugation isn't accepted and non white people in the west are finding their voice. But we still have the legacy of how our world was built and the prejudices that come with that.
This in essence is white privilege.
