I am one of the more fortunate ones. I’m working from home full time, and my day care is closed so I avoid a $400 payment there. Our petrol budget is $400 a month and that’s gone down to about $30 by the looks of it. Granted heat and electric will be a bit higher, and the booze budget too, but I’m definitely seeing a few extra shekels in the rainy day fund.

And then trump is gonna give me a wedge too, which is nice.

Just seen the unemployment figures in the US hit 10m already, absolutely crazy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I count my lucky stars every day. Wifefrom and I work in human services and have quite a few people who have tested positive. We are able to work from home for a full 40 hour week.

I am in awe of some of wifefrom’s staff. She had a group home for 4 elderly people come back with 2 positives. 5 of her staff immediately volunteered to live and work in the house 24 hrs per day for the next 2 weeks. Everyone else can return to their families and isolate while they will provide round the clock care for the next couple of weeks. Remarkable people

Based on what Fauci said with social distancing we are looking at 100-200k dead, 15% unemployment rate which is a 12% increase or 42m unemployed as a direct result.

if America stayed open the death figure would be 1-1.2m but little to no impact on unemployment.

the impact to save the few will last a long time
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A few according to your figures is about a million lives.

Let's also factor in that if we were carrying on as normal, the pandemic would still have a severe impact on the economy. In addition to the million deaths, there would be tens of millions of people who survive but get horrendously sick (read some accounts of what it can be like) and off work for a lengthy period. Economic activity would be depressed as many would sensibly choose social distancing to protect themselves and their loved ones over non-essential shopping and leisure. The healthcare system would basically collapse for months, with an impact on the wider economy, since more people than usual would miss work due to lack of treatment for other conditions, and this impact would be long lasting because many essential health workers would die while treating the pandemic.

Will be interesting to see how Sweden cope with their approach
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and if it doesn't blow up in their face, expect them to be cited by everyone who lost their jobs and income

Isn't Sweden doing social distancing and basically saying that because the population is so responsible, it doesn't need to enforce a lockdown? In other words, the impact on the economy may not be that drastically different from places with more stringent rules.

Lots of businesses are still open - bars, restaurants, gyms etc

So from that perspective if they remain open I’d imagine less businesses from those fields are at risk from going bust

US has lost 46 jobs for every confirmed case of Corona Virus

Financially it's not made any difference as I'm still working. If anything I'm a bit better off as I'm not going to five a side, not going for a beer or to a restaurant, not going anywhere basically plus I'm working overtime at weekends as we're so busy!.

Most days are no different for me. Work, take the dog for a walk and then watch some TV.

I do feel for those that have been affected as I interact with them all day so I'll never take for granted how lucky I am to have work.

Take care all.

I just read that a Cambridge University study has suggested that had we gone to lockdown one week earlier, it would have made the epidemic three times smaller, which could have resulted not only in thousands fewer deaths, but a shorter lockdown.

That's one study and all models are going to be flawed in some ways, not to mention the data inputs going into the models. But wouldn't it be grimly paradoxical if we later found that the more a country prioritised keeping the economy open, the longer it was closed down and the harder it was hit?

Definitely mentally. most difficult to do is NOTHING

I’m currently furloughed on 80% of salary. But realistically with pubs and bars etc all closed I’m not missing the other 20%. 80% is as good as I could of hoped for, a mate in Canada in same industry only getting 55% over there.

I do feel like one of the lucky ones though. My best mate is a chef in London too, they laid there team off and won’t rehire because the furlough scheme requires the business to continue paying wages to redeem at a later date. Their a top 50 restaurant too so not as if their not turning over money.

That isn't true. Massive difference between claiming unemployment as your job is currently not 'available' compared to not having a job, period.

Well, if my job was not currently available, I would say I had lost it.

Yes but having a job to go back to makes a big difference as opposed to not having one to go back to.

If you want to use shock figures go for it

Just this afternoon been offered furlough at 80% Govt subsidy, or stay at work and take an as-yet-undefined pay cut.

Chances are I'll be able to get a mortgage deferral, but lots of other bills need paying - got some maths to do in the next few days, see what expenses I can cut, since I'm supporting a wife and two young kids at the moment. Though funnily enough the wife has just been offered a job in an essential service, but that won't start till July.

Should be fine, but frankly could do without it. We'll see.

Cheers mate. Just the woeful or even non-existent PPE kit and lack of testing which is making life more anxious for them all. Still no sign of action from GVT or the military as promised last week.

In Dublin.

On a personal level, this has been hard on dogging.

I have some Moretti in the fridge, but it's not the same as a pint down the pub with your mates!
