Guarantee you if Boris survived he will get tougher begin these lockdown rules and the people who break them.

I agree. The lockdown needs to be tougher however hard it is for everyone. It’s also very difficult to enforce.

In terms of the constant criticism of the government though (which doesn’t help anything) it’s clear that the entire western democracy was completely unprepared for this - look at Italy, Spain, France and now the US. They all have the same problems - not enough testing, not enough ventilators, reacting rather than being proactive etc

The weather theory doesn't go out the window. It's hot as fluck in australia right now. It impacts the virus. I't basic science ffs. Spain hasn't been that warm.

As for the comment above saying Japan has closed cities, erm nope. Japan has closed nothing. They are carrying on like business as usual.

Tougher to spread in such a sparse country
----------------------------------------------------------------------

True but Sydney is populated (almost) as densely as London but only has 28 deaths
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were people piling onto the tube like in London?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure haha. Beaches packed though
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t Australia have a younger, and healthier, population as well?

I’m sure that has an impact. Still surprising it’s so low, of course.

It’s low 20s in Sydney - and pushing that at times too. Coming into winter so hardly been sweltering

NO country could have been prepared for this. It's utterly moronic to suggest we should have a huge stockpile of ventilators. This is a once in a hundred year thing. The last time anything hit so big was Spanish flu and that started in 1918. Governments don't budget or prepare for viruses that hit every hundred years. It wouldn't matter what government was in right now. Left or right.

Well that’s crap, this was breaking today..

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announces his intention to declare a state of emergency for seven prefectures including Tokyo and Osaka, due to the spread of the new #coronavirus. Initially expected to last for about one month.

Just checked the weather app. Sydney is 16 degrees and Madrid 15. Practically the same.

It seems some people are "virtue signaling" by almost competing over who wishes Boris the best. I don't wish him ill, but won't pretend to care either. I have more important people to worry about.

20's is still warm enough for viruses to die earlier. There is a reason why we all get more ill in the winter ffs. Have you noticed that we all get more in ill in colder weather or has that escaped you?

20% chance of survival for men that actually enter ICU with this.

I raise you Taiwan and South Korea to name but a few

Dunno why some people are scared to admit we got it wrong here. Surely we all want to come together after this and make sure this doesn’t fack up again and the first step to doing that is learning from the countries who got it right and make sure next time there’s a solid plan rather than ‘wouldn’t it suck if there was a pandemic one day in the far future?’

It's not crap at all, this was only announced today. Japan has been carrying on as normal so far.

It's probably not the thread but I'll be angry if I'm prevented from going out a daily exercise or the blame being in any way shifted on to the people of the UK who the vast vast majority are complying with social distancing instructions. Had we enacted a lockdown even four days earlier it would have more than halved the peak demand on our NHS. We are where we are I suppose. I wish Boris the speediest of recoveries.

I thought a big part of that was because we're all inside a lot more in winter. Not a scientist though.

He should of been put in hospital immediately for round the clock care till he recovered considering he’s the Prime Minister
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The government can’t preach the hospital won’t take anyone with mild symptoms if he went there himself

If every mild symptom went to hospital it’ll be like the Wuhan hospital videos in January, even more people will die

That is part of it for sure, but it's also the fact viruses and colds etc, survive for longer outside the body on surfaces in colder weather.

I heard you have a 50/50 shot at survival once you go into intensive care with this. That was the stats I read at least. 1 in 2 people die. I may be completely wrong though, but those were the stats I read.

Got it. I also heard advice that over 24 degrees C the virus starts dying. Not sure how solid the science is, though.
