I don’t think SAF bought a load of unproven youngsters who we wouldn’t see the results of for 4/5 years. He went out and bought a mix of proven players and good players from mid level clubs.
In regards to the current situation, there’s no way we can rely on these youth signings other than to hope down the line 2/3 of them turn out to be good signings and one day help the next manager.
We have been buying top youngsters from around Europe/world for quite a few yrs now. I am yet to see one come through. Its sort of good to see however I am not remaining optimistic that any can come through to be a good first teamer at United
is the clubs intention to build the club from the bottom up ensuring we have a top squad say for the next 10 years rather than focusing on the immediate?

Ok, then where does Cavani fit in then?
Can't see him playing for longer than 1 or 2 years.

Fergie didnt really sign any unproven youngsters back then, the whole set up was different, they were picked up at a grass roots level in local areas playing for moss side under 12s or something like that
but the principles are the same

im not saying it will work, just could it be what the club are looking to do, it would certainly make sense with the players we have signed over the last 18 months or so

Not to mention my mullet
Pretty fackin unbeleivable and depressing to think we've regressed so badly in 7 odd years that we are now back at pre fergie times in terms of structure and organisation.
It’s a beautiful idea, Dunc.
I’ve given you five stars because I’d *love* the club to have decided that through thick or thin Ole, his coaching staff and this Academy setup are going to run things for minimum five years, no matter what. I’d be able to deal with midtable finishes to see a proper project given the chance to run its course.
But there’s absolutely no way it’s happening. The evidence says that the board doesn’t have the patience, foresight or cojones to do it.
Not really comparable.
You can build for the future as well as the present. It's pretty clear from the past 7 years that the club have no real plan.

Great post. We have got a lot of fans that have been spoilt. They expect success and they want it now. What Ole and the club are looking to do at the moment is for the long term success of the club. Unlike someone like Jose, Ole will at the long term and try to put things in place that will put us in a strong position for the next decade or two.
I have said before that Ole could well leave having not won anything, but still having done a good job in terms of building a squad/youth squad and helping Ed and the board understand how we should approach making/keeping a strong squad.

There’s nothing spoilt about wanting the club we support - supposedly the biggest club in the world - make intelligent decisions.
You know deep down that all these youth signings are just a hopeful punt by Ed to quieten down some of the vitriol by claiming ‘look, United is about youth, so I have all these potential Messi’s to the manager’ when in reality the vast majority of them imo will end up being loaned out to some German or Spanish club within the next 12 months.
Any attempt to show that we are trying to take the high ground regarding a rebuilding process is kayboshed by the signing of Cavani, a guy whose agent has already admitted is coming for the money.
Jadon Sancho is exactly the type of signing SAF would have made if we’re going down that route. Next summer he’ll have his pick of clubs and we may have lost our one chance to get him with a clear run. Even if this summer had just been Telles, Beeks and Sancho we’d all have been buzzing as it would have been exactly what this club needed going forward in the immediacy as well as the near-mid future.
As I said you can build for the future as well as the present. You're making out as if Ferguson only cared about building for the future.
Like Rosso says, it sounds great in theory but we know that the board lack patience, foresight or cojones.
Do people think we now have a squad with good enough depth to deal with this season or does this season not matter? What was the point of getting CL football if we're not going to prepare ourselves to handle the season.
No team plans 10 years in advance. 2 or 3 perhaps.

Any sensible manager will want the best team for himself today as opposed to 3 years down the line.
Ole has been essentially set up to fail with the way this transfer window has worked out.
With 2 PL defeats under his belt one being a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of spurs ,hes already under huge pressure.
Even with the class of 92 those players really only flourished because they came into a side with Keane, Bruce, Pallister, Cantona, Schmeichel and Irwin.
All strong, vocal leaders of the squad who made sure these young players did the right things and offered some sort of guidance of what it means to be a United player.
Where are the leaders in our current squad? At best, we have Bruno. Someone like Smalling might well have been keeping around, not only because of his actual defending ability but also he was our longest serving player and by all accounts was a leader off the pitch.
