I am agreeing with him and it is what I said about you earlier. No derailing. We're on the same page.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GT, just to be clear, I was always in two minds over the Suárez affair and even remember trying to discuss it to no avail with Winston, but as I see and remember it, there was a very plausible case against Suárez (whilst I did also feel that there was also a potential case against Evra that was glossed over).

However, I honestly don't see any case whatsoever against Cavani, for reasons already explained here, and I think it's sad to see people trying to equate the two situations solely because they felt wronged before.

Even if the former case is perceived as having been wrongly ruled upon, two wrongs simply don't make a right, and it just isn't right to use this case as a score-settling exercise.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I 100% agree that Cavani shouldn't be punished and that this is completely different to Suarez.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks mate.

Without wishing to go over old ground too much, what do you feel you tried discussing with me to no avail?

I don't recall that at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Damned if I can remember the details now, it isn't really worth revisiting anyway. In fact, I think I might also be conflating that discussion with another not long after about some other Suárez incident related to a tackle which you thought was malicious or some such. Again, my recollection of the issue is sketchy at best.

Apologies for having brought it up anyway, I think we turned that corner long ago and really wouldn't want to go back there unless you insist that there's something here that really needs revisiting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the announcement:

https://www.thefa.com/news/2020/aug/06/new-charging-policies-and-sanctioning-guidelines-for-discrimination-published-070720

Seems to be regarding discrimination, which is not the charge that Cavani will face.

I could be wrong, but I think the journalist is mixing up the wrong rules here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It depends on how they rule. If they rule that Cavani using that word amounts to discriminatory language, then absolutely the minimum 3 game ban will apply.

Give that the players' handbook describes discrimination as literally any reference to the below, I can see them applying that rule to be honest.

WHAT IS DISCRIMINATORY ABUSE?
DISCRIMINATORY ABUSE INCLUDES A REFERENCE WHETHER EXPRESS
OR IMPLIED TO ANY ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:
• Ethnic origin
• Colour
• Race
• Nationality
• Religion or belief
• Gender
• Gender reassignment
• Sexual orientation
• Disability
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"...includes a reference..."

You can make a statement including a reference to any of the above without the statement constituting abuse.

Abuse becomes discriminatory abuse when it references one or more of the above.

A mention of race or gender, for example, doesn't constitute abuse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly. Calling someone German isn't abusive

If Cavani does get any kind of ban, then basically the message the FA will be sending out is that you cannot use any word in your own native language that has two possible translations into English if one of them can be deemed offensive, regardless of whether the context in which they used it clearly indicates that you were using with its other meaning.

Seems like a pretty slippery slope considering all the different nationalities represented in the PL and the different languages its players communicate in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It also means that using any language that they deem to reference, intentionally or otherwise, any of the identifiers in their list *regardless* of the context or tone can constitute an offence.

No more jokes between Lingard and McT about Irn Bru or cups of tea and scones at half time

Great point.

I get why some PC stuff is in place, we do need to respect each other more, for sure.

But when a commentator gets suspended, (or whatever term they are using) for saying the word “handbags”to describe players getting into a tiff, I really do wonder where the fck we are headed.

The Collins English dictionary even has the below description:

an incident in which people, esp sportsmen, fight or threaten to fight, but without real intent to inflict harm (esp in the phrases handbags at dawn, handbags at twenty paces, etc)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn’t just use the term ‘handbags’ though.

That comment in isolation isn’t why he was suspended.

It's a funny old world.

Imagine a scenario where you went to live abroad, posted something on social media that you deem perfectly normal and then someone in the country you've moved to picked it up and used it to punish you.

I have no issue with people needing to understand what is culturally acceptable here but this didn't happen here, it happened online.

It seems odd to me that the FA get to police what is put out on social media channels.

I get why it is the case, but feels like they're entering into an area where they will struggle to actually handle it.

If you’re going to post on the English Premier League JA606 board, you really should learn to speak English properly, Barry.

He doesn't deserve a ban, he has done nothing wrong.

However it'd be difficult to argue a ban given the current state of the lefty, PC taken to far state of society.

Yeah I've tried to work those in a bit more recently. There are a few that I didn't even think would be possible. like he's, instead of his. That has been a nice addition that I was not expecting. Gaining more popularity too.

yes

uruguay is probably the latin american population with the highest % of european ancestry (and the lowest % of native american and african ancestry)

most ppl in uruguay are italian/spanish

you do get the occasional red haired italian or spaniard

incidentally..luis suarez is clearly of mixed racial origins himself...he is certainly not a bog standard Italian/Spanish ...he has some native american and or black african in him
