Pretty sure he's not an "alien" - but without evidence who am I to suggest otherwise, eh.

What he definitely has been though is United best and most influential player since Rooney left. Mata has been a joy to watch, but his age and lack of selection kid of stifled his impact.

Pogba is the real deal, but that's not to say that the usual divvy tw@ts thought (and I use the term in it's vaguest sense) differently. You know the ones, those that thought lingard, welbeck, cleverley, januzaj, herrera and some dopey twins were United quality.

There are still plenty of such special types about, I heard one on the old radiogram thingy the other night claiming United should move him on because he has "legs that are too long for a midfielder".

Pretty sure there a many similar special folk masquerading on these forums.

For the majority of his time at United he hasn't done enough of the dirty side of the game. You can disagree all you like, but I have seen it with my own eyes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you - and others - have claimed that he's done nothing in his time at united, what was his excuse before COVID etc etc, why should i trust your eyes? people demonstrate on this board - and this site - every single day that they couldn't understand a game of football if they watched it whist jonathan wilson and bielsa offered a running commentary next to them.

people seem to see what they want to see with some players, pogba especially, but the stats suggest that he puts in every much of a defensive shift as other united midfielders, and indeed those at other clubs. he's made more successful tackles this season than any of united's other midfielders for instance. he has as many headed clearances and aerial duels won as the other 3 combined.

to take one randomish example, in the 18/19 season, his total defensive stats were better than jordan henderson's, with his goal contributions obviously miles ahead too (15 to 4 goals + assists less penalties).

that was the year he made it into the PFA team of the year - still the only outfielder to manage this since SAF - yet posters such as yourself will swear he's never done a thing.

You are talking rubbish. I've never said that he does nothing. He just doesn't apply himself as much as he could. I have always said that he has great natural ability. If he had even 80% of Ronaldo's drive he'd be a much better player than he is.

I thought that he was very good for France in the world cup and played for the team. If he put those kinds of performances in on a more regular basis then he'd be loved by all United fans.

well you did crack the tried and tested "has he had covid for 4 years" joke, which does kinda imply that his level over the first month of this season - when he was awful, and clearly unfit, as both player and manager have admitted - is his standard level, rather than an unfortunate blip.

The only way Pogba becomes undroppable is if a better, more mobile player than Matic arrives on the scene.

This may just save him and his inadequacies.

But currently, a midfield of that trio is just not comprehensive enough to dominate the better teams and in all honesty I think would be badly overrun.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're exactly right. We won't see the best from pogba until we get a more mobile DM or a world class CB partnership. Until then we wont get the best from pogba. He was kind of set up to fail at United, we've wasted so much money and time in the transfer market.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, no idea if it's right, it's just a theory.

But it's disappointing that Pogba can't change his game to suit the players around him.

UWW specifically referred to the fact that COVID made him weak and tired. I have always felt that he could dominate midfield with him physical attributes. And yet he is often pushed off the ball by smaller opposition players. And there have been quite a few spells in his time at United when he has looked unfit (tired). That's not a joke. Its just the truth in my opinion.

that's fair enough...one of my frustrations with the player (and i do have some, they're just different to most people's) is his annoying tendency to pick up frequent injuries, which at times can mean he is in and out of the team a bit too often.

Matic was past him prime when we bought him. He's nowhere near mobile enough to do the Job Pogba does from deep. If Matic was the player we bought to give him the platform, Pogba wouldn't be played so deep most of the time since Matic arrived.

To be fair I have always thought that Pogba should have been played as the no.10 anyway.

The fact he doesn't apply himself annoys fans the most. Players with half his talent slogging there guts out whilist he ambles around with a can't be f@ c ked attitude on his face. Utd should've be built around this man but that's what could've been. A Utd Great he'll never be an he won't change now.

He's won some great silverware too but you'd be hard pressed to remember anything he's ever done in a match that stands out ever.

He's done more for Instagram influence than football.

Pogba has adjusted his game but you're not going to get 10/10 performances week in week out when you play a player out of position.

Was Giggs as good a CM as he was a Winger?
Was Rooney as good at LM as he was a striker?

there is another meme on here to the effect that "bruno has shown up pogba", which ignores exactly this point.

pogba has been moved all over the place (and dropped in a jose tantrum) since he rejoined, playing in a 2, a 3, a 4, and over on the left, with an ever rotating cast of partners, some good, some not so good (anyone claiming matic to have been a saviour should go back and read what the chelsea fans said when he was sold, most of them were over the moon).

bruno was slotted into a position in which we had spent 6 months trying to get by with lingard and pereira, and the whole team had been designed around a no.10 who wasn't even at the club at the time.

bruno got dropped into that role in his first game, and has almost exclusively played there; pogba's first game back was in a midfield 2 with fellaini, and he's been shunted all over the place ever since (eg he has his best season in 18/19 as an attacking midfielder, but starts the next one as a deep-lying one because the club failed to replace herrera).

But did Giggs and Rooney have the attributes to play in those positions. I genuinely believe the Pogba could play DM, B2B or AM and be one of if not the best player in that position. He has great ability and physical attributes. He just doesn't use them enough and doesn't show the level of desire.

Kdb got 7 assists and 1 goal in his first 10 games for city in the pl and cl this season
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the stats i am looking at suggest that he got 2 penalties and 6 assists in his first 11 games, which isn't terrible, and better than i expected, but i think the city fans on here will admit that he was way below his best. given that they have missed aguero for most of the season, and jesus for quite a bit of it, 1 goal from open play from a player often given a false 9 role is underwhelming.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Often? It’s only been like the last 3 games and he’s been motm in all of them lol

We're not playing him to his strengths. We're asking him to impact games week in, week out but he's seldom asked to start in his best position. Just because he is tall, we assume that he's athletic and strong, but he's not that kind of player to be running around throwing in challenges and fouling people like a Mctominay. He is a techy player and need to be given the freedom to play his game but because he's our best player he's had to sacrifice that part of his game. When he was at Juve he wasn't playing deep, they had Pirlo doing the job that Pogba does for us.

Do you think he's absolved of responsibility that a midfield three of himself, Bruno and Matic is not good enough?
