It's just utterly bizarre seeing racism from UTD fans, as we have had some great asian and black players.

I remember it in the terraces in the 80s when fans would racially abuse a black opposition player then cheer on their team's black players... even as a kid, it struct me as idiotic.

It feels like the whole world is becoming divided again and I think a lot of the blame falls at the feet of social media.

It's as if racially abusing a player is "in fashion" at the moment. I know we hear much more about racist abuse now than ever before, but I feel like it has got worse over the last 12 months, where every game where a person in an ethnic minority category does something wrong gets racially abused.

It's deplorable, but you just can't judge any fanbase based on social media racism. They all have them.

This is true our own "fans" were abusing Sanchez the other day but what is alarming is it is becoming more and more of a problem and there seems no way to deal with it.

No one is judging an entire fan base. This isn't about a particular club, and it's not about football in particular. It's a societal problem. And so when we gather to talk about football, we're still part of society and we have a responsibility to make it clear we don't tolerate racism when it rears its head among us.

football does bring toxicity out of people more though

I agree with that. Football doesn't make people racist, but it stirs up our passions and (like alcohol) tends to suppress inhibitions. The anonymity of social media can have the same effect.

That said, football and social media aren't the problem. Racism is. And I'm actually quite optimistic that we can make it better (not defeat it altogether, but reduce it substantially). Like JSPC's comment above, I remember unabashed, mainstream racism on the terraces as a little kid in the 1980s. We went from that situation to making it socially unacceptable. We can do the same now.

I don’t think it’s got worse, it’s always been there. It’s just now it’s being highlighted and people are rightly being called out for it. A lot more needs to be done though.

Anyone actually surprised? You see a woman commentating on football or calls for a Rooney like rule in the UK and just look at the reaction you see on this site.

posted on 12/4/21

If it’s ‘our’ fans abusing him they might do well to recognise that many of our players dive and cheat too. Just like every other team in the division. Absolute disgrace to empty racism in any form but especially hypocritical in this case if that’s what triggered it.

It's a disease that's always there. Used to be it was OK in the workplace, now it isn't, it was OK in a football ground, now it isn't. Now these tw@ts have got a voice on social media. There needs to be better policing online, either by the companies themselves or we the users, and if we can change some attitudes along the way, all the better.

Sexism and racism is everywhere. There are a few I work with and they would swear blind that they aren’t. It’s just pure ignorance in most cases and a lack of education.

I know it's being called out/highlighted more in the last 5-10 years, but I mean it just seems as if it has got worse (i.e. more cases of racist abuse) in the last 12 months.

It may be that all the abuse is being reported more than 12 months ago, that could be the case, however you see it after every weekend and multiple cases as well.

It is every game now. And you can't stop it. Unless you take players off social media, which is a wise idea anyway. Why would it be a good idea having the general public being able to contact a famous footballer anonymously, being able to say whatever they want with no concequences? There needs to be recognition that social media is just bad for people, especially famous people.

I think there is something to be said about this theory... I do think there are some groups and bots that are playing a part, then the racists football fans feel more empowered and start posting too. This sort of thing is happening all over the internet to try and create division, anger and confusion.

I imagine social media plays a big part in players sponsorship deals though, and their income on top of their playing salary.

Being able to post on Instagram holding a pair of your new boots etc or tagging a company you've done a promo for and it reaching millions of people/fans/followers instantly is likely why these companies pay the players.

Agree with that assessment, It seems deliberate and targeted.

Social media companies have failed to protect users.

Facebook, Twitter, etc need to make sure every account has identification linked to it. That way these kants can be easily identified and punished.

Why punish the players and not the offenders?

It is a simple solution, social media companies should demand you sign up with identification (even if you use a fake name or persona on the site).

Once you do that, this will stop.

It will also stop bots.
