“In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was all over”

Stop selling the guns. Some farmers maybe to ward off trespassers but not required for the average Joe.

Or, stop selling semi automatic assault weapons to children and do some basic background checks for starters.

I know Republicans are trying to bring prayer back to school. But making kids fear for their lives feels like overkill.

Do guns need to be banned or do they need to look at the controls around the sales of them?

In the UK you can own firearms if you want to, we also occasionally have massed shootings.

I lived in Hungerford briefly and went to the same school and was in the same year as Michael Ryan, only for one year and long before he shot dead 16 people and he is not the only one.

America is complex, I have family live in several states from Florida to Wisconsin and New York to Vegas. The laws for everything, sales tax, police rules etc vary from state to state. I think I only knew of one uncle in New York who ever owned a gun, and that was when he was a security guard. In Wisconsin most of the family own guns, my niece's have had their own rifles for a few years now, the eldest has just graduated, they hunt.

I don't think you can ever ban guns in America, nor do I think you necessarily need to but I do think controls around the sale and ownership can be improved.

You can't prevent people with issues doing evil things but you can minimise them. Implementing any controls will be tough not least due to the US Constitution.

I hope they look at this.

I have used everything from 9mm pistols to 84mm anti-tank weapons and never killed anyone, nor wanted to but then that was military.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No guns, no deaths. It’s that simple. It is usually only Americans that can’t see this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People, quite rightly, have many views on this, but for me the fact that there are more individual firearms owned in America than there are people, cannot be good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/gun-ownership-by-country

There ARE anomalies e.g. the homicide rate in US virgin islands but they work the other way too with mega low rates in Canada, Falklands versus gun ownership and the high homicide rate in South Africa versus a lowish gun ownership rate.

Irrespective, USA is an outlier.

In the UK, land owners aren't even allowed to put signs on their land that trespassers might be offended by. The government has recently spent large sums in investigating ways to require land owners to be polite towards anyone on their land without permission.

Suicide rates in northern countries tend to be high I believe. Reason given that I recall is the extended hours of darkness in the winter.

The right-wing gun lunatics are now bringing out their usual tactics of blaming everything except guns for the shooting, and using it as an excuse to target minorities.

A republican congressman tweeted that the shooter was a transgender illegal alien (all false) to suggest that the guns were obtained illegally (also false) and so gun laws wouldn't have helped.

The NRA are repeating that the true solution is to have armed police and armed teachers at every school (because apparently the police have never abused their position).

Worst of all, Fox news invited someone to be interviewed who insisted that the parents of the victims are the villains who should be blamed because they sent their kids to a public school and should have sent them to a private school that has more security.

It's insane.

The reality is that there are 400 million guns in civilian use in the US. More than 1 gun for every adult in the country.

Even if gun sales were banned tomorrow (which is not even on the agenda as it's politically impossible) and even if gun ownership was criminalised tomorrow (which is not even on the agenda as it's politically impossible) it would be impossible in practical terms to enforce in any meaningful way.

Just be grateful (if) you don't live in that country.

Texas Lt Governor Dan Patrick’s proposed solution:

Limit the number of doors school buildings can have to try to confuse shooters so they can’t find their way in, giving law enforcement time to arrive and intervene before anyone is shot.

Seriously.

It’s only a matter of time before they suggest arming schoolkids.

It’s not your country so no need to be concerned.

Now you all may commence with your hate of the US.

…and I’m still going to own my firearms.

This is an excellent expression of empathy to the families of those that died tragically.

How can this be your first thought without any mention of the victims or families let alone any form of sorrow or empathy. But as long as you’ve got your gun to protect you and your family from an imaginary threat Fox News keep telling you will bust through your front door any minute.

You can’t get any more ego centric than this.

Why would Poolmyfinger feel any empathy for the brown people he sees as invading the land his country stole off them?

With their refusal to seriously discuss disarming the nation, I'm actually surprised that it is not a law for every teacher's desk in the US to have a draw containing a handgun for self defence purposes in such situations

FFS they are proposing making mass child shootings events into a virtual reality, first-person, shooter game, for the protagonist where you have to crack the sequence to get to the next level. Gordon Freeman finding his way out of the Black Mesa Research Facility would be good practise for these nutcases. Hint: Use the vent shaft. Who knew?

Obviously the plan would involve forbidding students and former students from attacking their own schools, and every police officer knowing the floor plan to every school.

Pure genius.

Actually it is in Texas, so it may just work.
