There were a couple of pole vaulters (1 male, 1 female) who appeared to have no equals and just slowly progressed the pole vault world record over several years in order to secure the prize money you get for breaking a world record.
So dominant beating everyone else wasn't even the main concern
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Duplantis?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No they were a few years ago now. Was a bit controversial at the time as it's likely we never saw their actual best as they only used to bother increasing the height by a CM each tournament. They may have peaked without having truly pushed themselves yet still won everything.
Can understand though with the money in athletjcs not being particularly high compared to many other sports

Think Murray is a long way ahead of Wawrinka to be fair.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So do I, but he needed a couple more slams to cement it. Great record in Masters 1000 and titles overall but they are both on 3 grand slams, and they shouldn’t be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Runner up god knows how many times though. He was a losing finalist in aus a good few times and another couple in US. another at wimbledon too. When you take that into account he blows warwrinka out the water.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah 21 GS semi finals 11 finals. Quite amazing consistency really. No doubt in my mind Murray is Britains best sportsman at least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lewis Hamilton surely?
Anyone mentioned Usain Bolt yet?
Insane Olympic and WC pedigree, with 19G, 2S, 1B. Pretty much untouchable over 100m and 200m for a decade and a half, and was so dominant that he also made the Jamaican 4x100 team unbeatable.
Still holds multiple world records, including I believe the three fastest official 100m times ever clocked, and pretty much jogged the 200m world record into a headwind Also holds a bunch of other junior and unofficial records.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did Rosso. We need to stop comparing those who have been the all time greats in their DIFFERENT sports as I mentioned above.
If Lewis Hamilton was to play tennis would he get a state of the art racket whilst others have to use a wooden one? F1 and most team sports, money gives you a big advantage. Sports like tennis and golf have far more integrity and their winners deserve more respect than in sports where you can buy success.
Imagine the 100m at the olympics where Elon Musk could use state of the art robotic legs that allowed him to do 100m in 5 seconds? That's the equivalent Man City winning the league or Lewis Hamilton winning all of those titles.

Bubka was leagues ahead of the rest and became the first vaulter to go above 6m, but iirc he bottled a couple of Olympics and never won gold there, despite winning the World Championships a load of times.
With Isinbayeva, it was largely because she was around at the start of the women's pole vault, as it used to be a men-only event. She was basically able to break the world record at will because it was still a nascent discipline in which she had no competition.

Fed made $90.7m per Forbes last year despite barely playing lol.
Apparently he’s made over a billion dollars in his career, which is more than Novak & Rafa combined.
So Federer is more successful financially.
At the end of the day Murray's Scottishness counted against him and led to him only winning 3 slams in a strong era. Had he been English he may well have been sharing a load of slams like the other 3 guys.

It depends how you judge ‘sportsmen’. The thread has been based on the idea of superior specialists, using equipment everyone else has access to. In F1 the difference in P1-2 and P6 is the car/engineering.
Lewis has a great mindset to be switched on 24/7 in a very dangerous sport though.

At the end of the day Murray's Scottishness counted against him and led to him only winning 3 slams in a strong era. Had he been English he may well have been sharing a load of slams like the other 3 guys.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he was English he would have been spineless and won zero titles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His only plus would be he's got slightly more personality than Home Counties Henman and that ain't saying much.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saw footage of him counting his 165 million the other day in front of a mantle with three majors and two Olympic golds on it. Seemed quite happy

Think Murray is a long way ahead of Wawrinka to be fair.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So do I, but he needed a couple more slams to cement it. Great record in Masters 1000 and titles overall but they are both on 3 grand slams, and they shouldn’t be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Runner up god knows how many times though. He was a losing finalist in aus a good few times and another couple in US. another at wimbledon too. When you take that into account he blows warwrinka out the water.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah 21 GS semi finals 11 finals. Quite amazing consistency really. No doubt in my mind Murray is Britains best sportsman at least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lewis Hamilton surely?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It depends how you judge ‘sportsmen’. The thread has been based on the idea of superior specialists, using equipment everyone else has access to. In F1 the difference in P1-2 and P6 is the car/engineering.
Lewis has a great mindset to be switched on 24/7 in a very dangerous sport though.

He also considers himself British as well as Scottish, while people fight on the internet about his national allegiances. I know which guy I’d rather be

24/7? That's even more impressive that he can perform with no sleep
