Wasnt in the squad, though, and 11 of the 13 not even at the club!

It said: "Of those 29 bets, there were 13 bets on Mr Toney's own team to lose in 7 different matches between 22 August 2017 and 3 March 2018.

"Mr Toney did not play in any of those matches where he placed bets against his loan club as he was not in the match squad or against his parent club as he was on loan.

"Of the 13 bets 11 were against Newcastle whilst Mr Toney was on loan at another club. The other 2 bets related to a game between Wigan v Aston Villa whilst the player was on loan at Wigan but he was not part of the squad."

Still a bit crazy though yeah!

Sturridge got four months just for providing information about his potential transfers. Surely at least double that for actually betting on/against your own team is justifiable? In fact I'd say lenient.

Tbf to him newcastle were a decent bet to lose in those days.

Trippier got a ban for telling his brother he was off to Madrid.

I've no problem with players betting on they're own side to win but betting on them to lose is just a big no'no for me.

Also provided info to a friend that he was starting a game.

Can this not be linked to match fixing? lol

Anybody here old enough to remember the 1960's when Peter Swan, David 'Bronco' Layne and Tony Kay were involved in a betting scandal, which resulted in jaiil sentences and a 'life' ban for all 3?

Different times, different values.

Now I can see why it's 8 months. If there was a player at my club betting on my team I'd want them banned from football for life

That was match fixing, the judgement on Toney made it very clear he wasn't guilty of match fixing and if they had found him guilty of that the punishment would be far stronger.

True.

Joey Barton got 18 months for betting on football. Toney is fortunate that he is only banned for 8 months which is effectively only 4 months because of the summer break.

In retrospect Joey Barton deserved even longer for being Joey Barton.

It's good that Brentford are willing to support Toney.

Maybe they could ask their "Official Principal Partner" Hollywood Bets for advice?

And this is what makes a mockery of the whole thing. Like punishing players for eating a Big Mac when you have McDonalds as the sponsor.

I read that football receives over £100m pa from betting sponsorships. And betting on football matches earns billions for the betting industry, which tries very hard to recruit younger gamblers. A marriage made in heaven!
