Steven Davis retires

What a servant he’s been. Incredible career.

Like any other professional footballer, I have known that this moment would arrive, but like many others before me, it is difficult to put this moment into words.
After much deliberation and conversations with my close family, friends and medical staff, I have decided to call time on my career.
As a young boy from County Antrim, I could not have dreamt of the opportunities which football has given me. I have met some wonderful people, at Aston Villa, Fulham, Rangers, Southampton and in the Northern Ireland camps who have all helped to shape my career.
Without all the managers, coaches, teammates, medical teams, kitchen staff, media teams everyone behind the scenes and at the training ground and stadium, you've all made the last 23 years be as enjoyable as it has so thank you.
The privilege of captaining my country, reaching a major European tournament and breaking the British caps record is something that will live with me forever.
The past year has been a challenge but being afforded the chance to manage Rangers, even for a short time, gave me an experience which I will be grateful for, for many years to come.
I have so many special moments, medals, goals but also those instances where disappointment drove me on to try to achieve more. I have played with and against some of the greatest players of our time, and have been managed by some exceptional managers.
Sadly, my body has not progressed in rehab as I would have liked, but I am extremely grateful to the medical staff who have supported me, and the family, friends and teammates who have helped me over the last year.
To the fans who have supported me through my career, words will never be enough to say how grateful l am but that passion from the stands every week is why I love this beautiful game.
Lastly, I want to pay tribute to my wonderful family who have lived and breathed every high and low through this incredible part of my life, you've made me the man I am today.

For a footballer that's a well above statement.

My lawyers have advised me not to say any more.

Always liked Steven Davis as a player and he struck me as a really decent guy. Hope he has a long and happy retirement, he deserves it.

He did refuse to sign until soton paid us a fee. Was never like Naismith etc.

Outstanding professional at the peak of his powers with a young family… he would have been crazy to stay.

A tremendous player IMO. Struggling to think of a better Rangers midfielder in recent times.

Being reported as loan with obligation to buy, would think there’s no real money to spend just now then unless it’s simply him being a bigger outlay

Heartbreaking isn’t it?

I mean, our club set their stall out for at least 4 quality signings to improve the first team in this window and we’re well on track with another £3m project and the looming spectre of watching the wonderful talent in O’Reilly heading out the door in the next few days but certainly by the summer so we can top up our bulging bank balance.

But have no fear. We have the imminent return of Maeda and Hatate which will be greeted like two new signings thereby completing 75% of our target.

The board are to be applauded
