Much better players than Mainoo have frozen on the international stage. International tournaments are not the same.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Agree completely with this.

Also, sometimes it brings the best out of players. I don’t like or particularly rate Pickford but he’s been excellent for England and I wouldn’t want anyone else between the sticks this summer. Maguire is very good for England too.

If the ‘Golden generation’ taught us anything, it’s that it’s not just about picking the best eleven players and therefore that brings the best results. It’s something that I feel Southgate has got right tbh, not that he seems to get any credit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep agree with this. I think another good example is Trent, he’s a fantastic player but does he make England a better team? Evidence would suggest he doesn’t, so he doesn’t play that often.

I have issues where a poster questions the motives of black Africans playing for countries other than their parents' country of origin

…….

Especially as that isn’t how nationality works. Mainoo was born in England and is thus English by birth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s not how nationality works VC, at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You are conflating ethnicity with nationality. Mainoo is "English" by birth, why? Because that is how citizenship works, the law in the UK gives him the right, you know that, so why ask? He's ethnically Ghanian.

He's a Manc through and through FFS!

I’m not conflating anything mate:

A child who is born in the UK will not automatically be a British citizen. A child will acquire British citizenship by birth if they are born in the UK to a parent who is either a British citizen or who has a form of settled status, such as indefinite leave to remain, at the time of the birth.

Please stop trying to create a race argument here mate, the only things I care about are that he’s seemingly got the skills to become a top player and like you say he’s a manc through and through

Southgate picking players who he will manage next season at OT so makes sense. A new contract for Maguire and Shaw too.

You can blame Cinci for that.

Mainoo is 19, he was born here so his parents have been in the UK during his birth and since so his parents were either "British / had a form of settled status, such as indefinite leave to remain, at the time of the birth"

It still does not change the fact he's "English", he's ethnically Ghanian. What don't you understand?

You can be a Manc, Ghanian and Englishman. Mainoo can be what he likes. He has the right to play for England and no one can change that or question his motives.

And as that was the case with his parents then he is British by birth.

Have another go.

I think you are confused. No-one is questioning that he’s English. I was merely correcting VC and you that merely being born in a country gives you the right for being of that nationality. It doesn’t, as I have shown above.

How many others have come through in the Prem and shown such composure in CM at that age, Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere come to mind.

Both his Ghanaian parents spitting feathers this morning.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sensationalist statement.

Why would his parents be spitting feathers if he holds British citizenship to the UK through birth? He is a dual national and no doubt considers himself English through citizenship to play for England. I'm sure he considered Ghana but has opted for England. I'm also certain his closest family members were consulted before he made the decision, where's the issue?!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, being brought up in a Ghanaian household I am sure he considers himself English. Lets cut the crap, he chooses England as the rewards are higher, nothing else.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Unless you are a dual national you know eff all, Cinci. Why does it have to be about rewards, he's getting that anyway by playing for the biggest club in the land? Why can't you just accept his decision because he is legally able to play for the country of his birth? Does his colour and ethnicity bother you?! I bet it does otherwise you would not kick up a stink!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here it is. Acknowledging his ethnic background is racist. I think it is a shame, we go on and on about racism, the best stand would be for the best players to play for the country of their origin instead of choosing their colonisers time and again. Most of the legendary French team quite openly admitted they see themselves as African but chose France due to the rewards and chances of success being far greater, why the fack is it taboo to own that??
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's none of our business to question or examine their motives and yes a white person carrying out such an assessment has bigoted connotations, rightly so. It is often only questioned by those who are bigoted.

I doubt Mainoo would be less Ghanian because he played for England, his ethnicity are rooted via the culture he shares with his parents, his ancestral links to Ghana through his bloodline. However, it is ludicrous to suggest he can be any less English, it's all down to the Kobbie the person, you simply can't generalise just because he's black, same goes for the black Africans who played / play for France.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would you have the same issues with what Cinci said if it were English & Scottish? Don’t get why you brought race into it; these conversations happen all the time in many sports regardless of race.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Especially given many of the non-black / African players in the French team (I assume he’s talking of the WC winning team) also have ancestry outside of France (Giroud - Italy, Griezemann - Germany/Portugal, Areola - Phillipines, Hernandez - Spain).
