Sounds like Henderson went off injured at the weekend so it’s probably to add some cover to the midfield in training. He might not even make the bench yet.

An unwanted additional risk of another utd player getting injured this season.

Mainoo is a great prospect. I just can't see that an England call up now is in his best interests. Mind you I'm not sure that an England call up is ever in anybody's best interests.

When you look at our other midfield options (aside from Rice and Bellingham) I think he's more good enough to be among them. I think there's a question around him endurance-wise atm - he tends to fade as games go on. In fairness, so does the rest of the team, but Ten Hag usually takes him off before 90 minutes.

--------------------------------------------------

Tbf the physical demands of playing in England's midfield wouldn't be quite the same as playing in United's.

Part of me is saying it's far too soon but the other part is saying why the hell not. He's dealt so well with the pressure of playing for United and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes playing for England in his stride too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Agree. And 90% of international matches are either lower physical intensity or lower technical standard than the PL.

Both his Ghanaian parents spitting feathers this morning.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sensationalist statement.

Why would his parents be spitting feathers if he holds British citizenship to the UK through birth? He is a dual national and no doubt considers himself English through citizenship to play for England. I'm sure he considered Ghana but has opted for England. I'm also certain his closest family members were consulted before he made the decision, where's the issue?!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, being brought up in a Ghanaian household I am sure he considers himself English. Lets cut the crap, he chooses England as the rewards are higher, nothing else.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned already but I think they’re trying to make sure he goes with England and not Ghana.

Plus we don’t really have any deep lying midfielders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He can still switch allegiance until he's (?) 21, can't he? I don't think this is primarily about locking him in as an England player.

Unless you are a dual national you know eff all, Cinci. Why does it have to be about rewards, he's getting that anyway by playing for the biggest club in the land? Why can't you just accept his decision because he is legally able to play for the country of his birth? Does his colour and ethnicity bother you?! I bet it does otherwise you would not kick up a stink!

Have you ever met an immigrant, Cinci? First generation migrants often have a very strong attachment to their adopted home. And kids in the second generation tend to get their sense of identity from their peers and school life more than family. When I was living in Germany, I knew an English couple who had been living there for a while. Their kids were born in England but started school in Hamburg, and were fluent in both languages. The kids supported Germany, not England, in the football.

I would hope that most people in Mainoo's position would feel an affectionate attachment to both the country they grew up in and the country of their parents and ancestors. And wouldn't it be great if the gоbshites refrained from sitting in judgement of whatever choice they make.

Can’t play more than three competitive games before 21 if he wants to switch, and you can’t switch once you play in a tournament.

Here it is. Acknowledging his ethnic background is racist. I think it is a shame, we go on and on about racism, the best stand would be for the best players to play for the country of their origin instead of choosing their colonisers time and again. Most of the legendary French team quite openly admitted they see themselves as African but chose France due to the rewards and chances of success being far greater, why the fack is it taboo to own that??

Embarrassing how easy it is to get a call up these days. If he was Brazilian he would be washing cars on the street somewhere.

Really? How do you explain Richarlison.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There’s a good player there. Last time I checked he was also scoring for spurs now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can only assume you're wumming.
Richarlison is 26. Mainoo is 18.

Mainoo, Rice and Bellingham could make a great midfield three. Imagine them with Foden, Kane and Saka up ahead.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's none of our business to question or examine their motives and yes a white person carrying out such an assessment has bigoted connotations, rightly so. It is often only questioned by those who are bigoted.

I doubt Mainoo would be less Ghanian because he played for England, his ethnicity are rooted via the culture he shares with his parents, his ancestral links to Ghana through his bloodline. However, it is ludicrous to suggest he can be any less English, it's all down to the Kobbie the person, you simply can't generalise just because he's black, same goes for the black Africans who played / play for France.

Eh? Pickford’s certainly not weak. He’s been a more reliable performer, especially in tournaments, than Rice and Bellingham have.

I like Pickford. It's whether Gareth takes a risk. Could be his last tourney, so why not

This thread has highlighted 3 kinds:

- Those who don't care about England (whether they are English or not)
- Those who don't want to see another Utd player pick up an injury
- Those who are bigoted, they rather he played for Ghana.
