Exactly. We can't even afford a midfield, a proper scoreboard or a roof that doesn't leak, so we did pretty well considering.

The Greatest Failure in History of Sport

COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE
To whom it may concern,

I hope this article finds you well.

I would like to bring your attention to what may be the most serious case of catastrophic failure in the history of sport. I have just been informed that despite spending the most money in the history of the sport, all English teams have been eliminated from the Champions League and Europa League at the quarter final stages. I have provided a breakdown of the squad costs by team below (trnsfermarket purchase value):

Bayern (€475m) v Arsenal (€680m)

Man City (€936m) v Real Madrid (€573m)

Atalanta (€pizza)

Man City were unlucky. Otherwise absolutely rotten from the English sides in Europe. Hopefully Villa win their comp to salvage some pride, even if it is just the Farmers conference paint trophy shield

It's the foreign players in these English clubs letting everyone down. The English players are excelling and are the real talent for these clubs, and not just for the English clubs, as we've seen for Bayern and Real Madrid where Kane and Bellingham are the stars of the show. English players Foden and Bellingham even scored their penalties in the shootout, while foreign players like Silva and Modric miss.

It's about time English clubs brought in some top foreign talent to match the quality of the home grown guys for once. They can't keep doing it themselves.

Good point, is it a coincidence that Dortmund have improved since Sancho came back. Dier, Bellingham, Kane, Sancho - England will have decent representation in the CL.

Abraham and Smalling in the semis of Europa with Roma.

Watkins in the semi of the European papa johns community trinket

I don't think that's the issue here Spurtle. It's more about the cost/value of squads. Kane is in his thirties and essentially worthless now so can't really say that Bayern have spent big for no return. Yes, he was cheap and has returned no trophies but it's more about the coverage Bayern get in England now. It was a shrewd commercial signing, if arguably a very, very bad one in terms of success. That's modern football though. Different metrics. It is much more important nowadays to increase your reach on social media rather than attempting the impossible task of retaining the trophies you've easily won for the past 11 years. I'd argue surprise is actually more profitable.

This season at Bayern was all about dragging out the one more series of the Kane saga - the next series will end with Kane and Dier holding up the Bundesliga trophy with Kane crying with joy in an interview about how as a young boy he dreamed of winning the German title

Prem is just hugely overrated. Christ, even Wolves have beaten the mighty Man City three times in recent years.

Prem just pays insane fees for players thinking it equates to quality.
