World Cup vs Euros

Having not won anything since 1966, the thought of winning the Euros would be absolutely mega.

It would also introduce a winning culture for the next few years

1.5 Euros per World Cup.

It's the world cup without 2 teams that can win it.

WC will obviously always be more prestigious. But the old 16-team format of the Euros was better to watch than the WC I think. Not as fun since they diluted it and have possibly a little easier to win - Portugal wouldn't have won Euro 2016 in the old format if memory serves.

If WC = CL then EC = PL

yeah they finished 3rd in their group, won the whole tournament with a single win in regulation time against Wales

Pretty much this. Euros is only slightly lesser in value than the world cup imo.

wow you really think they're so close?

I understand on paper you still have most of the top teams but the euros just doesn't feel as special to me. I feel like I know the number of times each team has won the world cup but I don't have a clue about how many times each team has won the euros, it's just always felt like a bit of an afterthought

maybe if England had a better history in the competition I would feel differently

Not so many bad teams in the Euros but on the flip side, no Brazil, Argentina etc

Barely anything in it - the World Cup is the Euros plus Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

The Euros is incredibly difficult to win, only one Spain in 2012 have ever retained it, only 3 host sides have won it - and none since France in 84.

The 16 team format was arguably the best international comp of all time - groups of death, intensely difficult Quarters and the Semi finals nearly always contained 3 of the 5 best sides in the world.

England have never won it and only made 1 final - we struggle horribly in this comp.

This comp absolutely loves an unfancied winner as well - USSR, Czechs, Denmark, Greece, Portugal - the Dutch winning it in Germany was not expected but the squad they had was elite so…….

Rather see Tottenham win the Audi Cup tbh

Really enjoyed the old format of the Euros, 16 teams, 4x4 groups, top 2 straight into the QFs but UEFA need more money so they Fack things up with this tournament

There used to be a greater difference between the world cup and the euros due to difference in style of play and unknown players etc. Now most nations have their players playing in Europe playing dull copy and paste European football. You get the occasional Mexico or Ecuador or the likes who turn up an play unorthodox football.

The same was true for the Euros in the past, there was more variation.

PL greed and oil money cheating in England has ruined international football by trying to hoover up all of the top foreign players and managers.

This has killed off exciting flair players who would otherwise be playing elsewhere and actually killed off the English style of play other than in the lower leagues.

Euros is special but still not quite the same as the World Cup.

Agree, always made the qualifiers so much more interesting too.

I agree about the old euros with 16 teams - It made the tournament fun to watch from the start. Now it's a bit like the CL where the group stage is meh and the real fun kicks in at the KO stages.

The CL should go back to a straight knock out competition too. How much better would that be?

FIFA are even worse increasing the World Cup to 48 sides now - there will be 104 games total played in that tournament. Added an additional week to the World Cup schedule making it just over 5 weeks long - players are barely going to get a break at this rate.

Also 16 European teams will def qualify and it could be 17 - barely worth doing qualifiers. We’re not gonna have the likes of Italy missing out in the future

posted on 10/6/24

I mentioned elsewhere but pretty much every team in every group is odds on or close to evens to qualify from their group. Only Albania and Georgia are much above evens.

They've done the same to the CL now as well with a massive group stage and then at the end of it 24 out 36 are still in the competition.

The threat of losing and going out of the competition is what makes it competitive. Not whoever wins goes through but whoever loses also goes through but in a slightly lower position.

Nonsense.

I don't really compare international tournaments with domestic football. Especially now, with how odious top level domestic football has become.

For me, they're both special. World cup slightly more so, although I'd say I enjoy watching the Euros more.

Only if you get to the latter rounds though

One better thing about the Euros is the lack of time difference.

The prem will be full of players getting to the Quarters in most World cups
