Back in the early days of the EL, the complaints were that teams in it were not taking it seriously enough, hence the carrot of the CL - I initially thought this was a good idea. My mind is changing because the CL is becoming so diluted with the number of teams qualifying through the league etc, European football is just becoming a free-for-all.
Back in the old European Cup days, the UEFA cup was a significant trophy to win, and sometimes you had better teams in the UEFA than the European Cup.
This would never happen, but if you made the CL top 2 qualify (maybe 3 max), you would get better teams in the EL, and make it a respected trophy to win outright.
The carrot of CL football overshadows this, because it's all about money and the CL has just become such a financial beast - for me, the only way to readdress this balance is lessen the number of teams that can get into the CL, which gives the EL more prestige in its own right - perhaps in the current format we need to take away that carrot, but what also annoys me is people complaining about the current rules when they have been in place for years, just simply because of the league standings of the finalists - that could happen regardless of the CL carrot

Obv the same applies to the EPL in terms of money
But if UEFA are not just about the CL, they would try to give the EL more kudos, not just give more places to the CL

Yes it's odd that the CL is the main point rather than winning silverware but the sad truth is CL money will be huge for us moving forward. So far in the EL we have made €36.4m, in comparison PSG so far have made €137.9m and I'm sure whoever wins it will getting even more.
Trophies are nice (we've won 5 post Ferguson) but we do also need to think about our future and how we can best prepare ourselves moving forward. What's frustrating is that we have had huge sums of money in recent years that could more than do for us to be competing higher up but we've spuuunked it all.

It's all about the success for me. The CL spot is just a bonus and I get it can be important but I go to watch Utd because they are my club and in the hope to see if we
can win something.
Watching Bruno potentially lift another trophy is a feeling 1 million times better than qualifying for a tournament.

But if UEFA are not just about the CL, they would try to give the EL more kudos, not just give more places to the CL
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They are under threat from the smaller countries walking away because UEFA have pandered to the large countries so much. If that happened it becomes (could argue already is) a de facto super league and then why not just run your own and not be part of UEFA we are back to the American proposal or middle east money.
Hence why they increased the CL participation to diddy countries this year and expanded the competitions - they are fighting still against outside influence.
It would benefit my club to be able to be part of a transnational league and the same for the bigger clubs in Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark, Austria etc. I realise that cuts adrift the even smaller clubs in those countries and I don't know if they want that or not?
As things stand really only wealthy clubs can win the competitions and that is not healthy. The game could be so much bigger and overall wealthier if borders were abolished.
Of course I realise that sitting pretty in the EPL you don't immediately need it, might fear it and may resist it but deep down you'd rather be playing in Glasgow than facking Bournemouth & Brighton.

1000% agree with OP. Trophies above CL qualification.
A trophy becomes part of a football clubs history.
CL qualification is nice, but a trophy is better

                     Bobby
I'm not, I'm discussing why the narrative of CL is overshadowing winning an actual trophy and it applies more to us than Spurs who are financially in a better place.

Oh, and to add to the OP's point. In thirty years I'll remember Garnacho and Mainoo scoring in a winning cup final v City more than I'll remember finish second with Jose.
Is this the level where we want to be? No.
Is this the level we're at? Yes, and we should embrace anything good that comes our way whilst we hopefully strive to improve and get right back to the top of the game. It doesn't have to take ages either. We were the better side v Barca two years ago and now look at them. About to win the league and also really unlucky not to reach a CL final.

t's all about money and the CL has just become such a financial beast
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But the EPL is just fine, aye?
The irony
Just all you boys behave yourselves in Spain - the polis take no prisoners and UEFA don't give a single fack about the supporters treatment.

Could get proper naughty.

Picking up trophies certainly takes the sting out of being shiiit, if we can achieve that for a 3rd season running I’ll take it

The UEFA suits were at our game last night so hopefully they can be reminded of the prestige of the original UEFA Cup which we won twice during our glory days. Remember, Spurs were the first English club to ever win a European Cup

Arsenal haven't won a major trophy 3 years in a row since 2005.
Liverpool haven't done it since 1990.

I think they go hand in hand, winning a trophy is great, but making the CL after finishing bottom half the table is also a huge bonus.
You also have to consider the clubs future, CL brings in revenue and makes us more attractive to players joining.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I still don't trust our judgement on recruitment though.
It's all about the success for me. The CL spot is just a bonus and I get it can be important but I go to watch Utd because they are my club and in the hope to see if we
can win something.
Watching Bruno potentially lift another trophy is a feeling 1 million times better than qualifying for a tournament.

Oi, it ain't all about you. You're talking like it's a given that you've won this thing and have already qualified for next year's Champions League

That's the thing...if we win, we'll have extra transfer funds.....and probably muck it up .....
