Newcastle want somebody to compete with Jacob Murphy on the right who had a very good season for them.
I do think Elanga is a good fit for Newcastle but I think the money it's going to take to get him is probably too much for a RW rotation option.
Be very harsh to drop Murphy too. He's a terrific player.

If we’re on the Elanga vs Cunha comparisons, Elanga notched 17 G+A in 38 PL appearances last season (0.45 per game) in what was a breakout season for him.
Cunha racked up 21 G+A in 33 appearances (0.64 per game) having contributed almost exactly the same figures the previous season. In a worse side. And in a role which actually suits our setup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for confirming similar numbers.
Elanga is 23. Heading to a better team. Playing under a manager who has shown he can get the best out of his players.
Bearing in mind how poor we were, I find it bizarre the arrogance our fan base still have bearing in mind he is heading to a club playing their trade in the champions league.
Yeah right he won’t cut it at 15th place Manchester United. He went on to bigger things!
Wake up
----------------------------------------------------------------------
CL or no CL. Playing for Manchester United invites more pressure than any other club in the league. That is a fact.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He never got given a fair chance to perform. Whilst Antony given ample chance to stink the joint.
I am not sure the relevance of this point. Elanga never struggled because of expectations. He never got going in the first place due to limited chances.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're saying "went on to bigger things". Yes, he's playing in the CL, but playing for forest or Newcastle is not the same as playing for United.

Elanga was given quite a few opportunities, especially under Ralf from what I can remember and wasn’t anything special. Sometimes you just have to accept that a player needs a move to help their development, ideally at a smaller club with far less pressure. He’s done well at Forest but I still do t think he’s good enough for what we want and we would have never been able to give him the game time to see if he could improve.
We did ok selling him for £15m at the time.

There's a reason he went to relegation threatened Forest. I also think he suits Forest's style and I question whether he'll hit last seasons numbers another time.
Anybody able to point me to their posts in which they kicked off about selling Elanga because he had huge potential and they predicted a team being willing to pay £50 million+ for him? Because I don't remember seeing anything even remotely like this.
Was regarded a decent sale at the time. I still think it was a good move for all involved.

You honestly believe playing for Newcastle is the same level of pressure and expectation as United?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This whole "pressure of playing for Utd" is such a pathetic unquantifiable excuse.
Players like Rasmus have failed because they are 19 with limited experience thrown into a big club and expected to lead the line of a dysfunctional team. Set up to fail. Similar could be said about Garnacho who probably had too much too soon.
Players like Antony simply are not right for this league. Flourishes in Spain, but made to look very average vs Chelsea in the ECL final.
Zirkzee is a decent player but he is not one to lead the line or get 20 PL goals. His career to date has never supported that he could.
This excuse that it's the pressure only really applies to Players who are weak minded and they will likely fail at any big club. Many of your failed signings have simply been poor signings, or poor attitude from the players like Sancho or Rashford.
posted 1 day, 7 hours ago
Speaking more generally, if Elanga was showing what he is at NF for us, we obviously wouldn't have sold him. But if you think about it, no matter what our struggles are, the vast majority of players that leave us are doing so because they don't seem to make the grade. If they did, well, we wouldn't be selling them. (Players like Ronaldo and Beckham to Madrid are exceptions to this).
So players that leave will tend to be sold for lower fees and they may well improve at a 'lesser' club and therefore be considered again for a chance at a 'bigger club' (Smaller and bigger simply refers to club resource and what is considered their 'normal' standing)
So whilst Utd are guilty of many poor business dealings, I don't think this is one of them - it will happen to most big clubs where players haven't quite made the grade (and can apply to managers also for that matter)
But it's easy to just use it as another stick to beat the club with.
The big question is, can Elanga, along with NF, come anywhere near to how they performed last season?

We've seen it happen time and again. Multiple managers and coaches have talked about it. Players have talked about struggling with it, and players have talked about seeing it in their peers.
It very obviously isn't the reason why all players who didn't meet expectations at OT failed to make the grade. But it's a large part of the reason why some of them failed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A large part of the reason?
As said. It's not quantifiable. There are a myriad of reasons why signings can fail.
Who in your opinion has failed because of the pressure.
Liverpool don't seem to have this issue. Expectations there are just as high.
What you suggest is that someone like Antkny failed because of pressure at Utd whereas if he'd gone to LFC he would have excelled. That cannot be proven but also I don't think he'd excel anywhere in the PL. Chelsea sent Sancho back and paid for the privilege of not keeping him. That points to the player not the Utd pressure as to why he's failed to hit the expected heights.
Some players simply cannot make the step up from somewhere like Betis or Dortmund to a big PL club. And being thrown in to a dysfunctional club will not help that player make that adjustment.
For me it's easier for a player to make that step if they are going to a very well run club like City or Liverpool. Going to Utd where the expectation is that you're the one to bring back the glory is added pressure but borne out of the fact that Utd are a mess and need saving. If Utd were in great shape it would be easier for a player to settle in and make their mark.
So my view is more nuanced in that all big clubs bring big pressure but you need to create an environment where the players can flourish, even when expectations are high and United fail to do that whereas other teams do. Rasmus is the perfect example of how not to do it.

Clearly playing for a huge club like United brings added pressure. The media attention United get compared to other PL sides isn’t comparable. Of course there are a whole bunch of other factors but don’t underestimate how the pressure to perform for United weighs heavily on players.

My point is that it seems to being trotted out as the excuse for why signings have failed or players not hit their heights.
I think the reasons for these failings are many, and obvious and that while the pressure is a factor, it is a smaller part than the other factors in play. Look at Liverpool. They having this issue right now? or are the likes of Gravenberch coming in and getting better and better in spite of the pressure. Some one like Nunez has flopped really, but that seems far more because of him and his limitations as opposed to an inability to live with the pressure.

You honestly believe playing for Newcastle is the same level of pressure and expectation as United?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This whole "pressure of playing for Utd" is such a pathetic unquantifiable excuse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We've seen it happen time and again. Multiple managers and coaches have talked about it. Players have talked about struggling with it, and players have talked about seeing it in their peers.
It very obviously isn't the reason why all players who didn't meet expectations at OT failed to make the grade. But it's a large part of the reason why some of them failed.

Yep, and United aren’t unique in this being a thing. Has happened with numerous players and numerous big clubs. Obviously wouldn’t expect a Spurs fan to understand something like this given the my are a small club.
