if your arm is raised, you are deemed to have deliberately made your surface area bigger in an attempt to block the ball. if the ball then hits you on the hand/arm, then it's handball.
alternatively, any movement with the arm towards the ball will also be deemed deliberate handball - as ordinarily you would be trying to get your hand/arm out of the way.

Noted - but biology 101 tells us that our arms are meant to provide us with balance. When do you ever see players running wit their hands by their sides.
It would be rather odd to see a player do such things.
i'm not talking about running, i'm talking about making blocks.
raise your arms and you're always risking a pen.
He didn't mean it.
But he went to try and block a shot with both arms up and out at almost full stretch.
His arm blocked the shot.
Peno.
I feel bad for him as he obviously couldn't help it coming off his leg but next time he knows not to do a superman pose when someone is shooting, because if it hits his arms by any means it's a penalty every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Metro to be fair I've never seen footballers running with their arms spread doing an aeroplane impression...

so when a full back chases a winger his arms should be tucked by his sides - that's ridiculous
I do think it was fortunate for us. But I don't think Richards needed to have his arms where they where when he put the block in.
Honestly, I still would have been very annoyed if we didn't get the penalty. His arms didn't look natural in that position, and it was more making himself big, than just to help him balance.
Anyway, we deserved the win, and on three occasions so far this season, we have outplayed the best team in the world. The 3-0 loss at their place was also flattering for them.

Wasn't there a swindon player that used to do that ???
Fjortoft wasn't it
definite pen whether it hit his leg first or not...once he decides to fling himself in front of the ball and his arms are out of control, if the ball hits his arm its a pen. The shot was on target making it all the more stone wall.
Its harsh but its a pen
*in the league*
Sorry City, but your not that good yet.
Metro
Please post a video of that
I only saw a quick replay.....did the ball not deflect off his leg onto his arms (which seemed raised to protect his face(the big girl)).
"the best team in the world" what????
I think this is a bit of a red herring. All deliberate handballs are penalties - end of. However, a handball is not a penalty if the referee considers that a player could not avoid contact with his arm - that is his arms were in a 'natural position' for his movement and whether a player was in full view of the situation. Add to that distance, speed the ball was travelling, clearness of sight etc ...
What is clear is that the defender yesterday made an excellent block with his legs, the ball rebounded up and hit his arm, which was raised but in a completely natural position for his posture. He wasn't looking at the ball and made no movement towards it.
I do not belioeve any other referee would have given a penalty in that situation - it wasn't even ddebatable.

His leg blocked the shot. The ball then went upward and hit his arm. Soft pen for me but Liverpool deserved to go through over the 2 legs anyway.
Just need Cardiff to do a Birmingham now
this is how a block should be executed

I think most honest LFC fans would admit to being pretty annoyed if a penalty was given against them in that manner.
>>Soft pen for me
I agree
but it was a penalty.

definitely
and I'd expect Kenny to give agger or Skrtel a b***cking for stupidly sticking their arm out in a completely unnatural position
redconn, aren't you contradicting yourself? If he didn't mean it, it shouldn't have been a penalty. now you you can disagree with the rules but as it stands you should think it was the wrong decision.

not at all
he was just unlucky the deflection hit his fully extended, outstretched arm.
