Best of Tennis 2012

Time for a little recap.

Want it or not, tennis calendar year revolves around 4 slam tournaments:
Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open.

The mini-seasons they each seem to generate stubbornly defy the logical need for symmetry: they don't all start with one or two 1000 Masters events, they are not on different surfaces, they appear like they don't care.

From the blazing sunny blues of Australia, raspy (g)l'amour of Parisian ageing Roland Garros, old, but prone to ageing Wimbledon, and smug, exciting, retro US Open swing of resilient New York, happy to keep jazzing itself into dust.

So what has the first quarter brought us?

From my tennis corner, it has been a gentle introduction into what lies ahead.

We have had a memorable, polarising AO final.
We have had Nadal resign from the ATP players' council.
We have had the sight of Ivan Lendl in Murray's box.
We have had a few young players make it to the second week of a grand slam.

The second quarter under its unofficial way, waiting to explode out of its blocks in a week's time on BLUE clay.

Slam draws expected with bated breath.

The most anticipated match of the year: Roland Garros Final

Consolation prize: Olympic Gold Medal.

Wimbledon will have to take a back seat....for once !

My favourite moment of 2012 is Nadal resigning from the Players's council.
Sooo happy about it. Time for him to stop throwing his weight about.

It's a very strange year in terms of pattern...or lack of rather. More than ever we feel that fitness and everything and they are all preparing to peak....NOW!

I can understand fitness.
But how do players peak with their game?
I just can't crack that one...

I think athletes have always prepared to peak at big events but now more than ever peaking is a science.

I can understand peaking in athletics or anything else, but tennis must be so difficult to time as a game.
The more I think about it , the more I'm convinced is just keeping the emotional fuse from burning before its time.

Although....it could all well be just a pie in the sky!

You right that tennis is a tough sport to mamange peaking cause they play all year round. But we have certainly noticed a trend recently. Players peak at the AO...then 2 months break, resting and preparation for May/June/July, and then another break of a couple of months for the USO...and Torremolinos thereafter.

Federer seem to be the one (out of the top 4) able to play all year round at the same level roughly.

Anyway, what do you see as the best tennis moment of 2012?

Nadal winning MC for a record breaking 8th consecutive year and his 20th Masters, another record.

Really too early to say for me. Certainly Federer beating Nadal on windy conds pleased me quite a bit. Dubai too.

But I am sure the best of 2012 is yet to come!

I don't know why, but I have a grand feeling about the coming RG.
Last year's was really good.
I hope they mess up with those balls again.
