It's the fans I feel sorry for.....

No, not us: City fans.

Growing up on the outskirts of Manchester I've met, lived near, socialised and worked with hundreds of City fans over the last 42 years. I even went out with one once but that was just 'cause her Dad owned a chippy.

And, fellow Trotters, I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

We all know some.

And I'm sure you will all probably now share my concerns for their collective well being.

You see, the problem lies with their psyche. Prior to Sunday any City fan under the age of 50 would never have seen their team win anything important in their lifetime, so as a coping mechanism they developed a weird desire for what I can best describe as "anti-success" or "the nobility of almost doing it then spectacularly failing".

You only have to listen to the gurning Chatsworth residents talk about their club - "Yeah, well....that's City. We wouldn't be us if we were actually any good, would we?"

But things have changed forever now and I genuinely fear for them. How are they going to cope mentally with this switch from being (in their eyes at least) loveable failures to a club which has actually won the title?

Give it about ten games next season and if they're top of the league you'll see them start to panic in increasingly large numbers. They'll be imploring their players to start giving the ball away in midfield and start shooting for Row Z again.

So I urge you my fellow Whites to stop what you're doing today and go out and hug a City fan.

He might look at you a bit funny at first but stick with it and let him know you'll be there for him next season.

I've just been out and hugged one.

It took a while before I cuaght up with him and at one point I thought I was going to have to knock him down with the car but eventually he ran out of breath and I jumped on him.

We shared a nice moment together and I told him not to be scared but I don't think he was convinced 'cause he shouted "Leave me alone you fat freak!" as he ran away.

He'll think back and thank me come mid-November....
