Slams are about quest for glory rather than ranking points chase. Nevertheless, their results invariably shape the rankings so one cannot entirely forget about the points either. A handful of ranking swaps in the preliminary table. Most prominently, Federer is provisionally ahead of Nadal. So he has a good chance to.... who am I kidding? He has next to no chance to stay there after the French. In fact, this is the one tournament between now and the USO where Federer can seriously lose some ranking points. Likewise, this is the last big chance for Nole to add to his total.

Further down, Berdych is now provisionally ahead of Ferrer. Berdych has been breathing on Ferrer's neck since Rome, so it will be interesting to see if he can finally catch up with him here. Both seem to be in fine form. However, Berdych would appear to have a harder road to the quarters and semis. On the other hand, for all his consistency, Ferrer has only been to the QF at RG twice, and never further than that. So it should be interesting.

The tournament is finally starting in earnest. In spite of some wobbles, all the big guys are here and in fact pretty much all of the second tier are here too. None of the youngsters made a splash - yet again. Berdych would perhaps have made a better QFist than Almagro but the draw was not kind to him. Other than that, the best are all here.

Ferrer is now back in front of Berdych however he is unlikely to overtake Tsonga as he would need to make the final and thus likely beat Nadal to do that.

Similarly, Almagro is only one victory away from top 10, but that victory is likely not forthcoming.

At the very top, this is also more about jockeying for the best position in the upcoming summer fight for the #1 spot rather than about any rankings changes that may be happening here.

On one hand it feels like the tournament has had incredible amount of drama since Sunday, on the other hand we have just seen Federer beat Delpo and Novak beat Tsonga - as standard as can be for a slam QF.

So no upsets all the way through semis. We do have two more QFs to come but there will be no upsets there: Almagro is not winning (except for maybe a handful or so games) and neither result from the other quarter would qualify for an upset.

By reaching the semi, Federer has given himself a chance to regain the number 2 spot. Nadal has got to win the FO to remain at number 2.

Finally we have had an upset! Or have we? Well, we had so few of them these last two weeks that I will count this one. Ferrer is now one win away from #5 spot - so near yet so far.

As Tenez noted, Rafa now needs to win here to reclaim his #2 spot.

In order to maintain his strong push for the #1 spot, a SF win would really boost Federer. However, on current form that may be a bridge too far.

Should be an interesting Friday/Sunday.

As many have expected, Federer was not able to hold onto his points from last year. Similarly, Nole was able to improve on his last year's result.

If Rafa loses on Sunday, Roger will be #2 after the RG. However, in the more important chase for the #1 spot, this may hurt Roger more than it would help him. A victory on Sunday might perhaps give Novak enough cushion so that even if Roger wins one of the next two slams, Novak might hold on to the #1 spot.

SB,

how do the points work now at the end of clay season?

Schedule seems so compressed and chaotic, I have no idea when points for Halle, Queens & Wimbers get taken off plus all the rest....
Looks like we need the Grass + Olympic Points tracker version soon

So this is the final version of the RG points tracker, with Halle and Queen's having dropped off already (many tournaments are dropping off one week early this year).

Not much has changed point-wise. Nole, in spite of his loss in the final, improved his points total at the expense of Federer. However, he may need it as he has lots of points to defend.

Another item of interest is that Andy has been slipping this clay court season and is now closer to Tsonga, Ferrer and even Berdych than to Federer. Andy will need to do well over the next few weeks to confirm his top tier status.

Of course, I will be back with the Wimbledon edition next week. Interesting times ahead.

Thanks SB !
It's nice to see Nole's still got that lovely cushion between himself and the rest

Biggest winners in chasing pack are ferrer and Del potro with around 10% improvements, I expect Ferrer to have peaked and Del Potro to keep rising.

5 stars from me, keep up the good work!
