Murray will never win a Slam

He's 25 now so hardly a youngster (not old by any means) but he won't ever win in my opinion.

Nadal and Djokovic are both of similar age and far far better players, also Federer isn't going anywhere for next few years either.

I just don't see where a Slam is going to come from, he's just not good enough.

How long are we going to keep banging this drum about him being unlucky for being in an era with Djok, Federer and Nadal? He didn't have to face Nadal this time round, and at 30 and seemingly not playing at his best for much of the match, Federer was there for the taking. Murray simply isn't good enough to win a GS.

the blue professor

He has the misfortune to be around at the same time as Djokovic and Nadal who will dog his career right the way through.

I've heard this argument before. But every era has their great players. If he wasn't in Nadal's era, he would have been in Sampras', if not Sampras', then Agassi, Becker, McEnroe, Borg, Lendl etc. there's always going to be top players around in all sports - you cant just feel sorry for one because they are not as good as the cream in that particular era.

Criticising and complaining wil not help either. Sometimes ago, a young lad told me that he is more accustomed to digest a defeat as he is a Newcastle United fan but boy he did not change his allegiance unlike some glory hunter who would have preferred to support Man U.

Same thing here, if you think he cant win then maybe you can support him like the Wimby crowd yesterday.

I'm not putting forward the "Nadal/Djoko will always be around" argument as some sort of sob story

I am putting it forward to suggest that these top guys - same age as Murray, better players and mentally tougher - will probably be the reason for Murray never winning a Grand Slam singles. And after them will come others no doubt...guys maybe 4-5 years younger, who will then push the top three aside as they enter their thirties.

For me yesterday was huge - possibly Murray's best ever crack at a Grand Slam. Sadly for me he is just not quite good enough, neither technically nor, more importantly, mentally

Good point TMF, some people only support teams/players cos they're winning.

It's a good point, but the thing is most of us are born into following a certain football/rugby teams etc, that is simply not the case with non team games such as tennis. Each player has to earn respect and fans either by success or personality.

A more interesting comparison would be with Formula 1 where it seems some fans follow drivers as they move and others certain teams.

This is true. I just assumed English fans would follow the English/British drivers (i know i do) but apparently (with the majority) its more to do with teams than country-loyalty.

When it comes down to it tennis players are only representing their country when they play in the Davis Cup or in The Olympics. In the vast majority of tennis tournaments they are representing themselves. If they win an event its their name that is the winner not the country. This is obviously the same in many other sports.

I have no problem in people wanting to support a player from their country because of this or because they like the way the play or their personality and they happen to be from somewhere else.

Isn't it the case that in Grand Prix the majority of Italians support the drivers who drive for Ferrari (Italian team) 1st, whatever their country over any Italian drivers and probably Italian drivers after this.

As far as football is concerned I don't have too much of a problem with people being a fan of teams miles away from them, not including those who have moved (although I may 'wind them up' because of this), but if they want to watch them live they have got a lot of miles to travel. This is a good reason for me for supporting your local team.
