expecting so much from AVB?
serious question here, not intended as a wum but why are the Spurs fans quite so jubilant at this appointment?
normally appointing a manager who failed so miserably with some of your closest rivals would not be seen as step forward. quote his Porto record all you like but the Prem is clearly far more demanding than the Portuguese League and the man's last job in England was undeniably an abject failure
The Spurs community seems to have themselves convinced that the man's failure with us was purely down to the egos in our dressing room. sadly this only paints half the picture however. i have rarely seen a man quite so depressingly out of his depth in every department as AVB was with us
let's start with his tactics-dearie me, where do i even begin? Spurs fell out with 'Arry due to his failure to comprehend anything beyond the bare basics of the game. under AVB though it was the basics went out the window
one of the characteristics of his Chelsea tenure was a complete inability to organise any sort of defense. criticise the failures of defensive highline system as more the result of the failings of the likes of Terry and Luiz but then why is it suddenly going to work wonders with the likes of Gallas and Kaboul?
what grated me was the lack of any cohesion between defense and midfield. come on, it's not exactly rocket science that offering the defence some sort of protection from the midfield will improve the defensive record. going forward Mata was our only link between the midfield and the strike force
his man managemnent consisted of sticking with the Portuguese speaking contingent through thick and thin and banishing everyone else. that night in NAples said it all, the man banished Bertrand, Cole, Mikel and Essien to the bench to stick with Meireles and Bosingwa OUT OF POSITION!
then he goes and banishes to the wilderness any players who disagree or dare to question him-look at how he treated Alex and Anelka, Mikel and Kalou. this was not the egos in the dressing room, this was the ego of the manager!
even without AVB's own shortcomings, without Modric Spurs team will be significantly weakened. Sigurdson is a good player but losing Modric for him is like losing a twenty and finding a fiver. even if you get Moutinho (another player who has always flattered to deceive on th biggest stage) it'll be a poor replacemnt for Luka. yeah you have Adebayor signed up permanently but it's the story of the guy's career-once he's got what he came for his form collapses-look at his Arsenal form following his new contract, his form at City capitualted aftre a good honeymoon period-Real showed no interest in making a successful loan permamnet despite his obvious enthusiasm-this should say a great deal in itself
this is genuinely not a wind up but i'm finding myself bemused at how the Spurs fans have themselves convinced that a worse squad combined with gross tactical shortcomings is a sure fire recipe for success i'd love to know!
why are Spurs fans
