Proof, if any more were needed....

that football is living WAY beyond its means.

And yes, the irony of a Rangers fan saying that is not lost on me!

But Steven Fletcher about to become the most expensive Scottish player ever....

£15 million?

I know it is supply & demand, and Sunderland obviously want him, but really - £15 MILLION????

The sooner someone grows a pair at UEFA and actually tries to calm this complete nonsense down, the better.

Meanwhile Ian Black earns 50x more than the majority of his third division opponents.

By the way.

Proof that youse are a new club n'at is all in the reception black has received.

The old club's fans absolutely hated him.

Good to see he has found a new club where the fans welcome him

It is what it is. Players are worth what clubs are willing to pay for them. I don't believe Fletcher is worth that much but if an experienced and successful manager does then who would you listen to.

We could fill 1000 forums with the flops and bargains we have seen throughout the history of football transfers. At the end of the season, or soon thereafter, Fletcher will have proved, or not, that it was money well spent.

On the same point (sort of), salary caps work against the clubs who spend a lot of money doing the right thing to develop young players. The young players achieve a level of success and are immediately poached by rich clubs with no development programmes.

This approach has been tried in Rugby League in Australia with limited success.Clubs like Brisbane Broncos develop more youngsters into representative players than the rest of the teams put together but then lose them as their wage demands are too high to fit into the salary cap. They go to teams with no development programmes who spend all of their money on first team players.

Unless their is a rebate for developed players and players who have shown loyalty to a club, then salary caps are useless.

Rickboy - then an individual salary cap would prevent this, but would also lead to exploitation of image rights or another way round it! The rich will always prosper and there are enough "twisted" lawyers/accountants to loophole anything that comes into effect!

Bosman started the transfer issue/contract issue and someone will challenge the "freedom" to earn £300k a week if it is enforced!! Just ban agents

Agree Super that Agents, unscrupulous Owners and shysters will always find a way around a salary cap. My proposal is that;

a) if a player has come through the junior ranks then they are discounted for a period of time on their wages in regards to the salary cap.

b) If a player has been at a club for more than three years then they are discounted on the salary cap until they leave or retire.

This way clubs can hang onto their youngsters and loyal players for a longer period of time. Predatory clubs have to offer much more to poach these players thereby making it more financially viable for them to start their own development programmes.

Wouldn't we all love to see teams develop their kids, pay them a decent wage, and be competitive in Europe. Sort of like the 70s and 80s when football was good.

Just wait for the SKY bubble to burst and salaries will be capped!

"Just wait for the SKY bubble to burst and salaries will be capped!"

Unless UEFA apply a salary cap then British teams must continue as they are regardless of SKY. Can you imagine a situation where Man Utd are restricted to 1 million in wages and Barcelona can pay 50 million.

I can. Look at Rugby Union where French teams have no cap and English and Gaelic teams do. The French win all the big trophies (usually).
