The supermiddleweight division has always been a good hunting ground for british fighters, its one of the youngest divisions in the sport but since its emergence it has had its highs and lows, but over the last couple of years interms of talent and excitement its quite probable that its the hottest division in boxing!!
In the 90's We had the glorious fights with Benn, Eubanks,Watson and Collins, plus American superstars Royjones Jr and James Toney. Towards the end of the decade We had the likes of Robin Reid Richie Woodhall and obviously Calzaghe representing the brits, but the quality was starting to deteriorate as the top americans were fighting at middle or jumping straight to light heavy, the more marquee divisions at the time, so the super middle champs were mainly from Britain and europe. Calzaghe and Ottke were considered the best of the 2000s, but their apparent unwillingness to fight each other and travell away from their home countries further pushed the division down the doldrums.
But now though, a tremendous amoutn of amateur pedigree fighters have emerged at similar times, which tv network showtime has capatalised on and brought the very best fighters in the division to face off against one another to face the best. This has made the division look more tantalising and the top middle weight fighters want to step up and the top light heavy fighters step down in weight to fight against the very best opponents.
If your completely new to this division here is just of the names to look out for:
Carl Froch
Andre Ward
Lucien Bute
Mikkel Kessler
Andre Dirrell
Glen Johnson
Sakio Bika
Arthur Abraham
Kelly Pavlik
Jermain Taylor
All of these are top level fighters, but even then you can throw in the mix of gatekeeper/contendors Librado Andrade, Allan Green, Wbo champ Robert Stieglitz, Edison Miranda.
Then you have the Middleweight/lh fighters like Sergio Martinez, Jean Pascal, Chad Dawson,
And the young contendors like George Groves, James Degale, Edwin Rodriquez, all fighting to get into the mix.
For me the sheer wealth of talent in and around this division is what excites me as a boxing fan and hope that the tv networks put on more fights and competitions like the super six!!
Long may it continue!!
Super middles - best boxing division??

Glen Johnson, Jermain Taylor and Sakio Bika will most likely not fight any more competitive fights again. Taylor though in his prime was great to watch though, but 2 ko losses to froch and abrham meant the years caught up with him a bit.
Yes youre absolutly right that both domestically and internationally there's some great talent. Groves and Degale for the UK are the obvious stand outs.
The SuperSix has been amazing i think, many people have pulled out etc. so some have criticised it but it means the best fight the best, i mean Carl froch for example has had the hardest consecutive 6 fights probably in boxing history! no exaggerating either! Been a great competition which nows allows us to make an accurate assumption of who is best SMW in the world when froch and ward fight it out.
Whats even better is that i predict saul alvarez (the next big thing) will eventually make it to SMW, as hes flirting with light middleweight now and hes only 20! as he gets older and bigger he could quite easily end up a SMW too and bring even more class.

Glen Johnson's double career may go a long way to explaining his shoddy performances as England's right-back

Taylor wont fight again, Abraham has gone back down to MW as he only fought at Super MW for the supersix and looked awful doing it

Thanks for the comments.
Gael's forced wind, Taylor is fighting in august at middleweight, he's back with his old trainer.

And Arthur Abraham has repeated stated he won't go back down at middleweight, and may face Glen Johnson or Wbo champ Robert Steiglitz.
Ashburton Grovers after Johnson's and Bika's performances against Froch and Ward on showtime giving them seriously tough performances, My bet is they will be back.
