Three defeats in a row for Wigan

Sunderland ended their run of 12 games without a win by beating Wigan at home. Gomez stood in for di Santo although, after his outstanding midweek performance, Boselli might have posed a greater threat to Sunderland.

Wigan apparently had the better of the first half, although neither side could score. Gomez was sent off early in the second half, and McClean and Fletcher promptly combined to score for Sunderland. Di Santo came on - for Maloney - but Wigan were unable to hit back with just 10 men.

After a bright start to the season, Wigan have now lost three games in a row and find themselves in a group of six potential strugglers at the bottom of the table.

Next, Wigan face an in-form Everton at home, with points a growing need. Hopefully, di Santo will be fit to start. If not, Martinez will have to look beyond Gomez for a replacement. Several reserves are waiting for the call.

Gomez received a red card on Saturday. Martinez thought it a harsh decision, but Martin O'Neill said: "My first thought was it looked a bit harsh to begin with. Having seen it back, I'm not so sure that the referee had much alternative.

This time, the FA agreed with Martinez and the red card has been rescinded. Gomez will be available for the Everton game after all.

The point that Wigan deserved has not been restored.

The FA disagreed with Martinez on his rare outburst at Old Trafford and fined him £10,000.

He will still be on the touchline on Saturday.
