Derby Day memories and respect

It is derby day this weekend and the rivalry between the 2 clubs is hotting uo again just like it did in the 80's. Everton finished above Liverpool last season and are currently above them this season and they are playing some good football.

Everton were one of Liverpool's main rivals in the 80's along with Forest. Utd, Chelsea and City were mid table average teams so the intensity of the derby game was huge in that era. They had great players like Sheedy, Southall, Gray, Lineker, Van Den Hauwe, Ratcliffe, Sharp and Steven.

I have some great memories of the derby games i attended. My favourite had to be the 86 final which Liverpool won. I think there were 98,000 fans in Wembley that day and the atmosphere was electric. I remember going down on the train that was full of reds & blues. The banter was great, Brothers, uncles and cousins all ripping in to each other about which team was going to win. The game itself was a great final.

What are your memories of the derby and which game was your favourite?

The Derby turned for me the day that Guy spat on Neville.

When did it get so hate filled?

Singing the baby's not yours was bad tho, that must be really hurtful,as is your baby can't walk, aimed at Neville's and Carsley's kids.

Not sure Felliani. I noticed the change when Gary McAllister scored a last minute goal at goodison in 2001.

I was in the gladys street end with my mate who is a blue. I stood uo to celebrate like i had done for many years before with no trouble. I got punched twice and i noticed other reds getting punched all around us. I left the ground and never returned.

I went to the semi final last season at wembley and i thought it was good humour between the fans. I only saw one incident.

The 86 final is one of the first derbies I remember. I was 5, going on 6, and we went and watched it next door with our blue nose neighbours Adele and Ronnie. He was the spit of Ricky Tomlinson. I remember the scarves, and them really flimsy red plastic bowler hats. I remember millions, not literally, of people out for the parade a few days later. Good times .

I'd love the derby to be more friendly, but it will never happen. When your have supporters like me,filling their kids with hatred for the red's, then how can it end. I know my post sounds slightly oxymoronic, but I don't want to feel like this,I just can't help it.

I always have good banter with my cousins who are all reds, and with the guys at work. I suppose as I haven't lived in or around Liverpool for so long I'm a little detached from the brunt of any ill feeling.

It does seem that it's been in the last 10 or so years that there has been a build up of animosity between both sets of supporters, which I get only from what I read in the news and see on sites like this.

I was at that game and you could see the venom in the air. I remember one of our fans caught the ball, when Neville went over to get it he threw it down to the Anfield road end and told him to f c u k off.

I felt embarrassed.

It started going nastier earlier than 2001. It started back in the early to mid 90's when Everton were flirting with relegation and Liverpool were mid table mediocrity. You could feel it creeping in back then.
