Sir Alex Ferguson left out most of his big names from Manchester United's squad for the Champions League encounter with Galatasaray. Wayne Rooney was among those to miss out, even though he was able to return to training after sitting out the weekend defeat at Norwich with tonsillitis. With qualification already secured, Ferguson also left out Rio Ferdinand, skipper Patrice Evra and top scorer Robin van Persie among those not to make the trip. Paul Scholes was absent too, as was Ryan Giggs, the only survivor from that 1993 'Welcome to Hell' expedition to Istanbul, was omitted following his appearance at Carrow Road.

Sir Alex Ferguson: "Our players have played challenging games in various parts of the world and they will do their best tomorrow. We don't consider the younger players a gamble. It will be a great occasion for our players to go and make a name for themselves. Of course, our aim as always, will be to win. When we were here in 1993 the atmosphere was incredible. The home supporters have enormous passion and their enthusiasm is fantastic."

Galatsaray are without the injured Tomas Ujfalusi, while former Bolton striker Johan Elmander is doubtful. Among the other players familiar to an English audience are former Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboue and ex-Liverpool man Albert Riera.

Fatih Terim: "We are going to play against one of the best clubs in the world. We are going to play against one of the most respected managers in the world, Alex Ferguson, and his team. If we look at history, teams like Manchester United are not beaten that easily. If you can win against them, you can call it a victory. And if you beat them at the right time, then it is a success."

Matchstick - I can accept a loss like this after that performance in the first half

What is infruriating is that this performance makes the norwich loss even more hard to take

maybe SAF took Ando off ready for the QPR game... We can hope!

Ji - I hope so. However I still dont see why there was a need to remove powell

Ando may have been removed for QPR or even the old 'easing him back' point, both which are fair enough

couldn't agree more redreason, I was fuming on saturday evening....if Anderson and cleverly started United wouldn't have lost. To be fair Norwich played really well and deserved a draw, which is would have ended most probably but playing Giggs with Carrick in the midfield was nuts!

I dont think Ando has gone this long without an injury before.
Galatosserry were dirty ba*tards so I have no problem seeing Ando taken off seeing as the result is irrelevant.
I just hope he's gotten past all these injuries and can complete a full season and gets a lot of game time !
