Andy Robinson steps down

Andy Robinson steps down as Scotland coach.
Andy Robinson has resigned as Scotland head coach.
The Scottish Rugby Union confirmed Robinson's departure this morning, following the 21-15 loss to Tonga in Aberdeen yesterday.
Robinson had been under contract until after the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Scotland have lost 10 of their last 13 matches, including elimination from the World Cup at the group phase for the first time.

The Tonga defeat was the 19th in Robinson's 35 matches in charge and comes at the end of a calendar year which began with the RBS 6 Nations wooden spoon.

In a statement issued by the SRU, Robinson, who was appointed in June 2009, said: "It's been a privilege to be the head coach of Scotland and I'd like to thank the fans, players, coaches and staff for all their support over the years.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the players and the coaches in the last few years.
"I believe I have left the team in a better position than when I took over and have great confidence in the players and the coaches for the future.
"I am very disappointed by our recent results but I have belief in the players to develop into a winning team."

I wouldn't blame Robinson too much for the results during his tenure. The Tonga game was a classic example of players simply not having the right mentality at key moments. They are to blame. Simply amateur execution at key moments by Scotland when within in easy try scoring opportunity. This sums up Scotland over the last decade. He just didn't have the quality within the squad at all.

I guess it was inevitable really, but I'm not sure it really helps Scottish rugby, that seems totally directionless at the moment. It needs strong men with vision at the top of the union, as manager and on the field, right now I don't think Scotland have any of them and its hard to see where they are coming from too

I'm still not sure about Andy Robinson...you read the autobiographies of players who worked with him and they're very split on their opinion of his abilities.

I definitely got the feeling he was a top second in command more so than a born top coach.
