New Media vs Old Media

I often hear people talking about the 'New Media' showing the Old Media how things should be done.

There seems to be an attitude that this 'New Media' is the way forward, but to be honest, I find myself being slightly concerned by this idea.

In an age where the public are furious with the mainstream media for obtaining information through illegal means (phone hacking) and are calling for the punishments for when incorrect information is published (accusing an innocent person of being a paedo), I cannot see how we can then advocate the completely unaccountable internet bampots.

Dont get me wrong, if you count things like the social networks role in the 'Arab Spring' then this shows how these powerful tools can be used to counter the oppressive nature of certain state. This is obviously a fantastic use.

Is this what people, especially on here consider the 'New Media' though? If we are being honest we are probably more talking about the polarised idiots like Phil 3 names and Leggo. Also the award winning RTC blog run by a nameless individual that brought us the news that Rangers did infact lose the BTC.

How can we hold these basically unaccountable individuals who can obtain their information through illegal means as the future model for journalism? This method of reporting should be the polar opposite of where we are looking to move to.

The tabloid journos are accused by us all of having an agenda, and twisting the truth to suit whatever the flavour of the day is. IMO this is valid, not out of some bigoted affiliation, but just through the fact they are told to sensationalise to sell more copy. The new media take it to a whole new level though, they break the truth where it suits to play up to their lunatic fringe.

The mainstream media has allot to answer for, but the last thing we need in my opinion is to give credence to a group who take the mainstream media's faults, and magnify them by 10 fold.

There shouldn't be a regulatory body for any media. If you break the law, you break the law no matter what your medium for journalism and you will be suitably punished.

If only a self appointed expert on the matter were available

I do agree that regulation on the media is a touchy subject, and must admit, im not convinced on either side of the question.

What I will say though, is that it is much more difficult to hold someone accountable through the law who is nameless, and hidden on the net, rather than an known publication and authors who can be held personally accountable.

It doesn't take much for an IT expert to obtain an IP address, so nobody is completely anonymous

I don't see what's wrong with the current system in journalism. People broke the law, they got caught, they're gonna be punished.

If any other profession is found to break the law the same happens to them. They don't suddenly need regulated.

Ways round it though.

How about you post from an unregistered laptop, using a pay as you go 3g account? Thats going to lead pretty much to a dead end isnt it?

Press Journalists are bound by time constraints that mean they rarely do their own individual research and reports.

They are given press releases from agencies such as Reuters and the Press Association and they then have to basically just cut the story and re-write it to suit the house style of their own newspaper.

I think it's just reached the point where people are unwilling to pay for the same tired old news, when they can just click on the BBC website and know that the news is much easier to access and probably more reliable too.

The new media is dangerous because it lacks accountability, though.
