January window on Wigan

First, Wigan offered Dutch midfielder Ferrie Bodde the chance to train with them. Now, Wigan are to sign Honduras international Roger Espinoza in January when his contract at MLS side Sporting Kansas City expires.

It will be asking a lot of either to make an immediate impression, but any addition to the pool of players will be a benefit.

It's more imortant that the current players remain during the January transfer window, and that the injured players should return to full fitness as soon as possible.

If Wigan's rivals are able to make some significant signings, Wigan will find it even harder to compete. I hope Martinez finds something exciting to unwrap after Christmas.

Rumours;

McCarthy is Wigan's greatest asset, and several bigger teams, including Everton and Liverpool, have expressed interest. Wigan, of course, would miss him more than any other player.

Wigan need another striker - especially as Kone will be away for a month at the African Nations Cup. Martinez is looking at Kalou, currently at Lille. He would demand high wages - but they would be justified if he could score the goals to avoid relegation. Kalou, however, might feel more at home at West Ham or QPR.

Martinez is also talking to Manchester United about a short-term loan move for teenage striker Angelo Henriquez. He would have other South Americans for company - and Martinez did take Cleverley on loan from United.

Hope you take Henriquez on loan.

Angelo Henriquez has already trained with Wigan and will be available in the New Year. Martinez thinks the 18-year-old Chilean can make the difference in front of goal.

He said, "Henriquez is a goalscorer. He's going to be a top player. He's an out-and-out finisher and he can bring us goals. He comes in straight away to a very familiar dressing room."

I wonder if he will be eligible to play against Manchester United on New Year's Day.

Rodgers knows Di Santo from their days together as young player and coach at Chelsea. He remains an admirer and if it is a deal he can get done for free next summer to bolster his squad then it will appeal.

Meanwhile Wigan are plotting a £4 million bid for Leeds striker Luciano Becchio.
