May They Never Be Forgotten

Today, the 2nd of January, marks the worst day in the history of our club. I am of course, talking about the Ibrox Disaster. Fans from all over attended the match, which 80,000+ went to see, to "welcome" our fierce rivals, Celtic.

Towards the end of the game, Celtic scored through the legend that is Jimmy Johnstone, the Celtic fans jubilent, they had thought the game was won, the Rangers fans in despair, until, seconds before the end, Colin Stein scored to level the match. The feelings within the stadium at that time switched around.

And then it happened. A mass incident, where 66 people lost their lives, and many more were injured occured. It's assumed, swayying and stumbling of fans caused this incident to occur, and the resulting crush is what lead to the loss of life of these people. Among those that passed, 31 were teenagers, while one was only 9 years old.

The incident united the city, the actions of the then Celtic manager Jock Stein, who helped the emergency services, was one of the iconic images.

To borrow a phrase from him.

"This terrible tragedy must help to curb the bigotry and bitterness of Old Firm matches. When human life is at stake this kind of hatred seems sordid and little. Fans of both sides will never forget this disaster."

The following, is a list of those who lost their lives on that sad day.

Bryan Todd, Robert McAdam, Peter Wright, John Gardiner, Richard Bark, William Thomson Summerhill, George Adams, John Neill, James Trainer.
