Liverpool suffered a frustrating loss at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as Manchester United earned a slender victory.

Liverpool were very poor in the first half, giving United far too much space and time on the ball. The opening goal came on 19 minutes when Patrice Evra played a low ball across the Liverpool penalty area and Robin van Persie sweeped it in.

The Reds did not show any sort of urgency to get forward and it was United who looked like scoring again. Towards the end of the first half, Van Persie nearly doubled his tally with a back heel that was destined for the net but Martin Skrtel and Pepe Reina managed to deal with it.

Daniel Sturridge came on for the second half and Liverpool looked much improved. They started to attack more and searched for an equaliser, but just as they had started to look dangerous United scored a second.

Van Persie swung in a free kick which Patrice Evra got a head on at the far post, and it went in off Nemanja Vidic, who was in an offside position.

But just three minutes later, the game was back on. Steven Gerrard took a shot which was parried by David de Gea, and Sturridge was there to follow it up. From here, Liverpool looked the better team and should have earned at least a point.

Sturridge was guilty of wasting a few chances, most notably when he found himself with the ball a few yards from goal on the left, but he blazed it over the bar.

Luis Suarez and Sturridge showed promising signs of developing an understanding and caused United a lot of problems in the closing stages, but they managed to hold on for the victory. Another positive for Liverpool was the return of Fabio Borini from a broken foot, as he played the last half hour of the game.

Fair enough. On the wind up lad. Ha.

Suarez can play any of the four attacking roles with ease. What he has got is fantastic movement and that is transferable to any foreward position on the pitch. Defenders hate good movement and Rodgers understands this. That is why Borini and Sturridge have been bought and why Carroll has been moved on.

I agree with just about all the comments

Lucas played well. Allen was pathetic in the first half, good in the second.

Suarez is better anywhere near other than the centreforward role

I thought Sterling was a blouse today. Not up for it.

Wisdom did well other than costing us the goal.

Best thing about the game was Howard Webb. Got everything spot on other than the corner.

No complaints in that respect.

Webb had a good match other than a couple of corners.

Did Downing dive though? couldn't tell

posted on 13/1/13

The thing about the Downing foul/dive was that he would have gone down had he not already been going down. It was a foul regardless.

posted on 13/1/13

No. Evra cropped him and then used the diving had signal. Check it out. Cheat.

OK

I couldn't tell is all
