Around this time of year the topic of a winter break is always raised. European leagues have a month off so why shouldn't English clubs?
First of all let's ignore the “overpaid prima-donna" argument. The players are human beings after all and bleed the same as the rest of us.
In the “for" corner – it's a long hard season. Players can sometimes play 2 games a week with possible travel around Europe included. Niggling injuries accrue as the season progresses. A month off would allow players to recharge the batteries prior to the “final push".
The “elite" players will also be expected to front up for their countries when the rest are enjoying an international break. So no rest for the wicked.
Against: An old argument was the conditions in winter. But a lot of grounds now have under soil heating. It is unlikely players will injure themselves on icy grounds as in the past.
These days clubs employ a number of people to look after player's diets and medical needs. If Wayne has a twinge in his calf then the physios will be working day and night to remove the twinge. If travel is required then the medicos can make recommendations.
And then there are the fans. We don't directly pay the players wages through ticket prices but Sky does. And we want to be entertained!!
In conclusion then I am not convinced a break is required. Healthy young men should be able to give their all for 90 minutes once or twice a week. Managers can rotate their squads to suit their needs.
If anyone does need a break though it is the lower leagues where the players don't get as much care. Injuries can build up, etc.

The poor wee underpaid souls are worked far too hard in my opinion.

Joe Cole said he felt like he'd had another pre-season when he returned from the winter break in ligue 1, definitely a good idea, other countries play 34-38 league games a season and have no problem fitting in a winter break so i don't see why we can't.
