HMRC have been granted leave to appeal against the decision by a First-Tier Tribunal re Rangers and appeal has subsequently been filed.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has lodged an appealed against a tax tribunal ruling in favour of Rangers' use of Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs).
HMRC had claimed the scheme, which was used from 2001 to 2010 to make £47.65m in payments to players and staff in the form of tax-free loans, was illegal.
Rangers disputed this and a First Tier Tax Tribunal (FTT) ruled the scheme did not breach tax law.
The case will now be heard at a Second Tier Tax Tribunal (STT).
HMRC said on Monday that it had been granted leave to appeal against the FTT decision and that the appeal had subsequently been filed.
If the dispute is not settled at the STT, it is possible that it may go all the way to the Supreme Court - a process that could take years.

From my recollection, it can only be on a point of law i.e. something which was either incorrectly done by the panel, or ignored.
The leave to appeal does not mean there WAS something wrong, just that it needs to be re-examined.
It may be that the appeal sets aside the original verdict, and we have to start all over again......."

Dear god, the bill is gonna come to more than the amount we owed!
Who are they after anyway? They are getting nothing from us, so they planning on going after the whole EPL to justify the challenge?

Thompson and most other news sources outwith Scotland put it down as matter of course to come to pass. It was only the Scots media that started falling over themselves to appologise midway through the case

It is ALL about the EPL mitre "

Stupid thing is as soon as they go after the EPL, the politicians will step in and tell them to cut it out.
No government is gonna allow the EPL clubs go to the wall, it would be one of the biggest vote killers of all time!
I thought the FA had stepped in and settled any outstanding issues with this anyway? Or was that only the media rights issue?

Yea, think it might be a case of non football organisations. Dont understand why they didnt try to use one of them as a precedent rather than Rangers in the first place!

One aspect that I imagine would differ greatly with EPL clubs and Rangers is their ability to pay. Surley not all but the top clubs mitre is reffering to .

Maybe wanted a high public profile test case and maybe they thought since the business of a football club is so focussed it would be harder for the company to rationalise it into different areas
