Liverpool were hit with two sucker punches as West Bromwich Albion completed the double over them at Anfield on Monday night.
West Brom posed almost no attacking threat and it was Liverpool who were searching for a goal. But Liverpool were wasteful and could not break through an organised Baggies defence.
Luis Suarez had a number of efforts on goal, but similar to his performance against Manchester City, they were all wayward. Glen Johnson came close early on with a good effort and Jonjo Shelvey turned it in but was offside.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty as the clock ticked down as Jonas Olsson barged Suarez over in the box. But Steven Gerrard stepped up and his penalty low towards the right corner was saved well by Ben Foster.
Just a few minutes later, West Brom took the lead. Chris Brunt swung in a corner kick and Gareth McAuley headed it in from six yards.
Liverpool tried to get an equaliser but could not find their way through a determined West Brom team, and it was the Baggies who incredibly scored again.
A counter attack saw James Morrison release substitute Romelu Lukaku, and he slotted it into the far corner to wrap up the points for West Brom and leapfrog Liverpool, who are now a distant 12 points away from fourth place in the Premier League.

I can't think of any other team who dominates games to such a degree and so often gets sucker punched like that.
It's always the hardest type of loss to take and I feel absolutely sick. How does it always happen to us? We seem to be cursed, we will have more of these days as well.

Did anybody actually have the confidence that Gerrard would score?
Normally I would always back him to score, but I just knew that it was one of those days with Foster in the lead up to it.
-------------------
We are lacking confidence to put matches away and even Gerrard seems to be feeling it, that's up to the manager to address.

So yes Neville, you proved he had a view.

That was a very bitter defeat, considering the effort and good football we played, I hope they can pick themselves up for Zenit but we have a long way to go to come back now.

Neo Liverpool you have to blame the team mentality and defence for that. If you're dominating and get slightly rumbled, the other team looks very likely to score as you wobble. Trust me we've been through that at Spurs but now were dominating and defensively solid. Rodgers needs to start mainly at the back in the summer, you miss the likes of Hypia and need rock like figures in defence. You also need a top class holding player as Mascherano and Alonso have never been replaced.

Agree. We just don't have a winning mentality. I think a new holding player and keeper should be a priority. Time after time this season we have conceeded from set play and opposition run at our back four because the midfield don't stop them.
