Vermaelen needs a goal

One of my favorite moments from last season was Vermaelen's last minute winner vs Newcastle.

I don't think I have ever gone so mad after we have scored a goal, apart from maybe Arshavin's goal vs Barca.

Anyway, that was around a year or so ago, and I don't remember having a goal to REALLY shout about this season because we have not really pulled off a BIG win or a stunning performance or pulled out a victory from out of nowhere that meant so much to us like the Newcastle win did last season. I loved Walcott's hat trick goal vs Reading but sadly that match means nothing because of the Bradford debacle that followed it.

Anyway, my point is Vermaelen really hasn't been himself lately. He looks shaky, error prone and completely drained of confidence. Tomorrow is going to be a very tight match that could be decided by a moment of magic, a defensive howler, or a last minute winner. There is nothing I would love to see more than Vermaelen to score it. It is an odd thing to say about a defender but I think the thing that will really help get his confidence back is scoring a really important goal. For me he is a better defender than Mertesacker and he just needs to get some confidence back to show it.

Based on form, gervinho shouldn't play

Based on football Gervinho shouldn't be contracted to Arsenal.

Dubbed, there seems to be more resolve about this Everton side than previous ones. Perhaps as individuals, their players may not be anything special, but when they click, they are very good.

The five main players who worry me though are Anichebe, Fellaini, Baines, Mirallas and Pienaar.

Anichebe, although he is not anything special, has scored some very important goals for Everton, he knows how to win free kicks and his link-up play is actually a very strong point of his.

Fellaini for his strength and combativeness in midfield, as well as the timing of his runs into the box.

Baines has a wicked delivery and is very quick. It's going to be tough as he tends to overlap with the winger (presumably it will be Baines and Mirallas), both will give Sagna the run around if we have no-one tracking back to help support him.

Mirallas is actually more agile than I thought and he can outpace and outmuscle Sagna will ease if he's on song.

Pienaar's a grafter, but he is a solid player. Fairly quick, has a decent shot and cross. Anichebe will presumably be the focal point, so we can't fluff our lines when it comes to dealing with crosses. If we can nullify these five, then we will be fine but it's much easier said than done and Everton are in very good form.

Who actually is your first choice centre back partnership? Say you play a cup final tomorrow, who plays?

I think Koscielny is the best, for what it's worth.

Most people would say Koscielny and Mertesacker.

I expect us to monopolise possession tomorrow. Don't see their midfield getting close to ours tomorrow. Obviously Baines' set pieces will be dangerous, but having Mert in will help. Think Moyes may employ negative tactics against us so hopefully we can score early to draw them out and get in behind.

In terms of quick, incisive passing maybe not because Everton's players aren't as technically gifted but we are vulnerable to long balls from midfield. You've seen how our defence is so stretched whenever a long punt/long pass is played. It's partially because sometimes when we press, we get too tight to the opposition midfielders and it leaves loads of space exposed, especially with no defensive midfielder. But generally we don't deal with target men very well.

We always do well against Everton, if it was away I'd be more nervous but we should win comfortably at home.

Really? I think he's technically quite decent. Good player. No chance he's a grafter.
Kinda like their Rosicky in a way.
