As the rational in the PL is two extremes, at one end it is to avoid the drop into the Championship & at the other end it is finishing in the Top 4.
So as fans what do we really want from our club?
Do we want to determine success as Top 4 (as Arsenal clearly do) or is our measure of success winning a trophy, irrespective of whether it is the FA Cup, League Cup or the Europa League? (Discounting us winning CL or being capable of winning it for a few years yet.)
From my perspective an ideal season would be winning a trophy & qualifying for the CL. However if I had to pick one or the other I would plump for one of the cups, as it is actually winning something, rather than just qualifying for a competition.
I still think this season has been eventful for the club if we don't make the top 4, I think AVB has done well in his first season. Next year will in my opinion be the one to judge him on, he should bring in one or two players in the summer that will suit his requirements to advance the team. I would give him an 8/10 on his first season!
What do Spurs fans Want?

Just want to clarify as well United didn't compete in the FA cup that year at the request of the FA as it was thought that it would help England's bid to win the world cup. Unfortunately England football hooligans wrecked it anyway.
Plus anyone who thinks the FA cup has become devalued just because United didn't compete in it one year really needs to check their facts.

Lion,
This can be dressed up anyway people want it but the fact remains: we need champions league football and the money that comes with it if we are to progress as a club.
==================
And this is the bottom line. We, as fans, might have this debate about what we want, but its the players who want CL football, and without good players we wont achieve as a club. I dont like it any more than you do but we have to face that it has come to this.

What I will say is Spurs getting in the top 4 would mean more money and better players, which would in turn mean more chance of getting top 4 and more chance of getting better players again.

No what it attracts is total mercenaries who dont give a **** about the club they play for one way or another and will soon go somewhere else as soon as the chance arises.

So the ones who love football and tend to be loyal deliberately go to Europa league clubs?
You have just as much chance of getting mercenaries at around your current level as you are the CL level. There isn't some special brand of mercenaries that hunt out CL level clubs only.
There are players that want to play for clubs in the CL that is because it is the highest level, it is natural for a top footballer to want this.
CL clubs are much more likely to win the cups you keep banging on about as well. As far as I can tell clubs that feature more regularly in the CL seem to do better in the cups. Arsenal of the last few years being the major exception.

If you really are not too bothered about winning trophies winning games and the club pushing on I can see why it wouldn't interest you. It is something many fans would want though.

I totally get your point but what can we do? Rebel against it and stay traditional and treat the cups as the be-all-and-end-all? As I think I say yesterday, in the ideal world in today's terms we'd always be in the champions league and we'd win a cup every 2/3 years so that all our fans are happy.
Take Liverpool for example. Last season they were FA cup runners-up, carling cup winners and finished 8th (I think) - so what did all spurs fans do? Rip the pi55 out of them mercilessly, yet by the sounds of it spurs fans are mocking the same thing they want.
..... Can't actually believe chicken and I agree on something, think I'm gonna faint

That would be the ideal yes but its not really feasible so there would have to be some investement but that does not necessarily involve spending 500 mill and ridiculous wages
