How does Sir Alex Ferguson change this team around to create a team capable of winning the champions league on a regular basis and ending the dominance of Barca? What are your views people?

He would need to spend an awful lot of cash and perhaps have a plan b ready next time

why does everyone automatically jump to CASH as being the solution?
on another day utd could have had a goal in th efirst ten minutes and it could have been a different game
but overall a few home truths need to be realised.
firstly we lose the ball too easily in the opposition half, not a problem in the prem, big problem against barca
rooney needs to add discipline to his game (capello was right) and that position is as striker NOT midfield
giggs and schole can stay for another year if saf wants but not as the mainstays in midfield
I would actually advocate the use of fabio in midfield and possibly nani in the middle or eeven behind or in front of rooney
the suprise set ups actually served us well, geez even ando scored

Giggs should retire and Scholes to. We need to sign 2 new center mids and need a new winger. Valencia is not good enough and should not play for us. He is so right footed it is unreal. How can such a limited player start for us? Need a new striker as well and a defender.

u1545 - dont think we need that much restructuring tbh
a centre mid in the mould of keane and the rest is quite healthy
rooney can go back up front, we have berba and chicha, with the likes of wellbeck and owen
in midfield we have new signing, carrick, ando, youth like cleverly possibly pogba, morrison. then we have the likes of nani and valencia and even gibson and potentially scholes and giggs
defnce wise we have the twins, smalling evans oshea, vida rio evra
we are not in that bad a shape. a couple more youngsters to prepare for rio and evra etc and we are all good
too many new faces = instability imo

Shoot Messi, Xavi & Iniesta- that would be cheaper.
Barcelona are an exceptional. They still would be if United spent £250M on 5 world stars. United need to focus on being top dogs in England. We can qualify for another CL final if we avoid Barcelona. Injuries, form, luck etc may be factors which influence the outcome if we have to take on Barcelona next season. You can't spend recklessly and overhaul the team on the basis that it might improve the odds of beating them in a one off game in 12 months time.

It usually helps

true, but it didn't happen, and it didn't happen for a reason (hernandez being offside three times in the first 20 minutes didn't help).

glad you realise that

this is so true it makes the rest below seem silly.

wrong. Rooney has never been, will never is, nor never will be a 'striker'. Attacking midfield is his forte and greatest potential contribution to this great club. time will prove this, if not he will have been wasted

giggs and schole can stay for another year if saf wants but not as the mainstays in midfield
that was true 4 seasons ago, it's hardly news now

i would certainly not like to think that OT, SAF or MUFC could possibly be satisfied that the defence of either of the two flanks could possibly be left in the hands of either of those two wreckless and awol going wastrels.
if they are to stay, then cover for two proper (at least) wingers is the only sensible option. Nani in CM is an option, but he would need an awful lot of protection and MUFC are currently far short of having somebody like Keane around to do that kind of job. And besides, I am not sure the rest of the team are quite good enough to support that kind of luxury. This is exactly why Rooney should be part of a three-man CM partnership ( I don't really care who with), and then they could play with a proper, experienced, striker in front of them. hernandez may get better with experience, but, at the moment he is not really worth a starting place.

why do people insist on wanting rooney in cm? do you realise that dropping in there and pinging a few balls out wide for valencia to latch onto is not the same as doing it full time. He simply hasnt the skill, technique, vision
unless i am very much mistaken how is rooney a AM? he has played on the left etc but ultimately he is a striker
and to say the twins are wastrels, fabio was the best player for us untill injury

woh there cowboy
absent most of the time from his primary role and then panicked into losing possession (admittedly he was not alone in this).
it is no surprise to me that 6 months ago every twerp on these forums was identifying Raphael as the future right back for MUFC, now, more latterly, it is Fabio. Bovine and ovine in extremis.
Neither of them can defend (they have no sense of self discipline) and even though I realise that this is a modern phenomena whereby RB/LBs are judged by their attacking threat and their defensive capabilities are completely ignored this is not good enough.
I am 'old school' (if you like), defenders defend, creaters create and strikers strike. I am all for "total football", but in the absence of 11 players that can defend, create and score then I would rather have 11 players that work together as a team and perform their role at the top level.
I don't know the actual stats on the saturday game but I wouldn't be surprised to see that the ratio of successful tackles would favour Barca about 10:1 over the MUFC players. That is not something Neville or Keane would have contemplated.
I don't know if they were instructed not to tackle (for fear of yellow/red cards etc.) or not, but my best bet is the lack of abaility to tackle properly by Fabio (or Raphael when playing) would have contributed to that.
no, the only players that can take any credit for this game were the two CB's for preventing the 5-0 drubbing that so many scousers had hoped for.
