Rooney: the Decision

Many here know my opinion on Rooney, so i really don't want to get into that and the denizens of ja606 seem to have a roll-call of experts on the Rooney situation.

Much of what goes on in the summer transfer window is really one giant game of chicken and Rooney's situation is no different.
Nobody wants to blink first. Simultaneously, you know that one of the two parties has to cave-in, otherwise you end up with a big pile-up on whatever motorway.

It is classic chicken, because if the impasse is not resolved, both parties end up in a situation neither wants: Rooney is held to his contract and sulks his way through another season, running down his contract whilst the club gets zilch in compensation.

I stated at the beginning of this saga that In My Less than Humble Opinion, this was just contract-posturing, Rooney's last 'big contract' and i stand by it. Why? Rooney's and the clubs 'serious' options are limited. The traditionally big-clubs are not really interested and the canards about links to the arrivistes are just that, canards.

Take PSG: they have a manager who doesn't want to be there and is playing his own game of chicken with the club; a director of football who is facing a ban of about nine months; the team need reinforcements elsewhere and quite frankly, there is better value out there that they could look at in terms of wages and transfer fees; the player himself (Rooney) will still face the same quagmire of playing second fiddle to a better striker (Ibra), not to mention the upheaval of moving his family and his adaption to Paris!

Monaco? The situ is even worse.

The most likely scenario (and one i don't particularly like) is Rooney staying at United and awarded a new contract - but hopefully it is one that involves a considerable pay cut.

I really have no clue why Sir Alex felt the need to stick that in the public domain given that he was retiring anyway

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Probably to take the potential flak off Moyes if Rooney put in a transfer request after Moyes had taken over.

Now everyone knows that Rooney wanted out before Sir Alex left.

It was a very classy and professional move from Sir Alex to give Moyes one less thing to worry about.

Is this really the way United should be dealing with a player who sits 4th on our alltime goalscoring list with 197 goals?

According to you Macca, Roo had been out drinking a number of times and turning up to training with a hangover. According to you, his heart has not been in it and he has had problems with his fitness.

So yes, according to your own account of the situation, I think roo should be kicked out on his arris. It is hard to see why you would disagree, given your own account of Rooney's behaviour over the last year.

It's because I do not know why Rooney is acting like this and I'm keeping an open mind until I know. I have explained this is the reason

I'm not disagreeing he should be sold. I'm simply stating can we find out what the problem is and sort it but if not, Cya Wayne

I really haven't shifted from that stance

It's as if he is depressed or something rather than having a strop. Sorta like he already knows his future is elsewhere

I said right from the outset, I wouldn;t afford someone who's been here 18 months and having scored 10 goals the benefit of the doubt like I would about a player that's done an awful lot for us, as a striker.

The benefit of the doubt may be misplaced or it may not be but that's my own personal feelings on the matter

Macca, I agree we don't really know the details. But that's why I don't think it's as simple as saying we shouldn't be treating a player in this way that has scored however many goals for us because that isn't really the issue. Whatever the issue is, there clearly is an issue and it has nothing to do with how many goals Roo has scored for us.
