I was thinking (I know, I know) about the quality of our national squad, and the overall standard of our players and although we probably have gotten worse, could a case be put forward for the lack of qualification for major tournaments being a result of other nations improving and generally just becoming better than us?
Let's be honest, we were never that great to begin with (even when we had quality players) as our pitiful world cup history proves. So is it just a case that other teams have leapfrogged us as opposed to us getting that much worse?

Too many individual carthorses not pulling in the same direction. WGS will realign them to what we are best at. Carthorses pulling in the same direction and pulling FOR each other.
We have never been great, but we used to play for the jersey, Gordon will re-install the passion that compensates for the lack of ability.

WGS will realign them - like he did with the Celtic massive

The Scotland team is so shiiite individually, that if wee Gordon can use his pragmatic magic and build the collective, we might progress from shiiite to unified mince...Thats hard to beat.

plus, he doesn't suffer fools gladly - hence he left the Celtic support to go manage elsewhere

While it is true other countries have improved, we have quite clearly gotten worse over time.
We had world class players in the past playing for big English clubs and were one of the most consistent World Cup qualifiers for years. We've also had guys play in Italy and Spain over the years. Older squads really should have done better at tournaments.
Nowadays our players play in bottom half EPL teams, the Championship and a far poorer SPL. That shows the drop in quality. Go back 20-30 years. I can't see any of our current squad getting near the squad then. Maybe a fit Darren Fletcher but that's about it.
Croatia was a very good performance, but let's not get carried away, they were awful. They had a few players missing, their manager opened his mouth before the game which clearly had an effect on the team as well. Unless we put together 3 or 4 performances in a row of that nature then I'll not be convinced we've improved, or that GS is the man to take us forward.
I don't think any manager can be successful with Scotland at the moment as the media and the fans have such ridiculous expectations of players who are quite simply not international class.
