Bobby Robson national football day

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23617021

It is rare you find a football manager popular with players and supporters of all teams, admired the world over and widely regarded as a legend of the game - a man who inspired those he worked with and against, and about whom a bad word is rarely spoken.

Spot on,a gentleman who passing was a tragedy for the game as a whole
Hope it gets the support he deserves

Paul,

That's what usually springs to mind for me, is that Ipswich side. They were a cracking team with the likes of Mariner, Beattie, Wark and Butcher.

He had them playing great, fearless football for a good few years and as a Liverpudlian I recall most of the country got behind them, as a second team, when they were challenging for titles in the early 80s.

Sadly their own success made them a target and all their top talent was eventually picked off, by us as well.

Not many are universally respected but he was one. Some of those if onlys in 1990 though.

I think that Ipswich side with muhren thyssen gates cooper wark mariner Beattie mills butcher etc would go close to winning the league now as well

Probably would. They'd have certainly offered out a few drubbings that's for sure.

Was a very talented side that was broken up too soon.

Something similar, albeit on a lesser scale happened to their neighbours 10 years later when they had the temerity to finish high up in the league I recall.

Was in Holland in 92 when he PSV manager. Went to one of the reserve fixtures and he was watching a couple of his younger players. He heard that we were English, so he came over and had a long chat with us whilst the game was on. Really good guy.

We were due to do a stadium tour the following day, but he recommended we put it off until the the day after - because the first team were training on the pitch the day he said, so we got the stadium tour plus got to watch the first team train. Frank Arnesen was his assistant then, I seem to remember he ran around more than the actual players.

I think Shepherd ended up sacking him which just goes to show that he must have been a really great guy. Mind I did find this article and it shows what a pernicious influence on the club Shearer has been.
