Rafa ecclipsing Nole's great 2011?

Nadal is simply on fire this year.

Apart from his defeat at Wimbledon, he is almost unstoppable and his rise to number 2 ranking despite Wimbledon is showing how dominant he is at the moment.

Nole, Andy, Roger, Juan Martin and others, it's up to you to step up to the challenge chaps!

Even though he did have a pretty clear run at Cinci, I really didn't expect this level of results after his long layoff.

Given his pre-tournament press statements about grass being the worst surface for his injury, it wouldn't surprise me either if he'd thrown Wimbledon to focus on the rest of the season.

Let's see how he gets on at the USO.

On another note, he's amassed 2000 points over two weeks, the same as if he'd won a GS, with the difference that these 2000 came from best-of-3 matches. Something not quite right with the points system when that can happen imo.

Agreed on points.

Murray has won 2 Slams and been in final of a 3rd in last 12 months, yet Nadal just took his number 2 spot in rankings.

Was literally just about to write an article about this, great minds think alike. If Rafa were to win the US Open then he would become number 1 and considering the circumstances ie the amount of time he'd been off, IMO it will eclipse Djoko's 2011.

I think concerning the points, although its odd its needed to ensure that the rankings reward consistency and that the players focus on more than just the Slams. If not, players would be skipping tournaments and the intensity and quality of matches in the master series would suffer

Cheers forehand, I think you're right, if he wins us open and ATP finals he would be number 1 and had an incredible year.

I understand what you're saying re points but if we're not careful we have situation like we had in women's game where you have world number ones but hadn't win a slam just played lots of lower level tournaments.

If he were to win the US Open and ATP finals then considering the fact that he won't have any points to defend at the Australian Open and minimal at Wimbledon, it would be near impossible for anyone to overtake him as number 1, unless he was injured.

Yeah, that is a good point, but all systems will have their disadvantages. IMO, as a tennis fan, this systems lends itself to more hard fought tournaments with better line ups

I also wrote an article on the US Open and the possible favourite for it:
