Manchester United are playing in the Champions League for the 18th consecutive season, the longest current run.

In total, this is Manchester United’s 19th Champions League campaign, more than any other team.

Bayer Leverkusen are taking part in their eighth Champions League campaign. Their best performance dates back to 2002 when they reached the final only to be defeated by Real Madrid.

Manchester United are winless in their last four Champions League games (1 draw, 3 defeats).

Manchester United have lost their last two Champions League games at Old Trafford (v Cluj and Real Madrid). They have never lost three in a row at home in the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen have won none of their seven Champions League away games against English clubs, losing six (5 goals for, 17 against).

Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones are both doubtful to feature. Striker Welbeck has been suffering with an knee injury while defender Jones could miss out due to an ankle issue. Both players missed training on Monday. Shinji Kagawa returned to training after contracting flu and could feature whilst Wayne Rooney will again have to wear a protective headband.

David Moyes on playing in the Champions League: "I've been excited about it ever since I've joined Manchester United. I've been there before with Everton - we didn't quite make the group stages but this is different. This is a club that's used to getting to the latter stages"

Leverkusen could be without influential midfielder Lars Bender with the German international facing a late fitness test following a hip injury. The midfielder missed Leverkusen's win over Wolfsburg at the weekend as well as Germany's World Cup qualifiers against Austria and the Faroe Islands.

Sami Hyypia: "They are playing at home and they have big expectations in the Champions League this season, what happened last season (a last-16 exit in controversial circumstances at the hands of Real Madrid) - that can't be the same. I think he (Moyes) is under more pressure. We can be quite relaxed and enjoy tomorrow. We need to give respect but not too much, we have to have courage to play football as we can, only then do we have the chance to get something from this game."

The interviewer isn't a United fan so had every right to ask the question.

If I remember right that was Rooney's first interview of the season so of course the public want to know.

The timing of the question was strange though. Was completely out of the blue

That was known as the sucker punch question! He was probably under orders from the producer to catch Rooney out.

To be fair that's the only way we'd ever get anything near an honest reaction after the spin doctoring of the summer.
