Steve Morison

Back to his best last night - when he came on he completely changed the game. Won absolutely everything and scored a blinder - not joking when I say its the best I've ever seen him - maybe that hernia problem was why he was playing so poorly for you Yorkshire minnows - or was it just Warnocks influence that made all your players look toilet?

Not reliable in front of goal? 85 goals in 152 games.

And at the most important moment in his whole Leeds career, scored the winner that got us promoted.

LUFC Harrogate,

"And at the most important moment in his whole Leeds career, scored the winner that got us promoted".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes he scored the last goal of the 2009/10 season which gave us a win, and I thank him for that, however the other 76 goals that season played a much bigger part than Beckford's last goal.

Maybe as others have pointed out, if he hadn't missed so many chances during the season, we wouldn't have had to endure a last game win to get auto promotion.

Beckford wasn't even the top League 1 goalscorer that season Ricky Lambert was, and Billy Paynter with 29, and Steve Morrison with 23 prove that it wasn't difficult to score in that league.
.
His record since has been woeful.

Just because he scored 85 in 152 doesn't mean everytime he had a chance he scored, or even most of the time he had a chance he scored. That stat is not the be all and end all.

If we had a stat for chance conversation rate I bet there would have been a lot of strikers who had a much better percentage than Beckford in the league that season.

I am not saying he was a bad player. Just not as good as his goal scoring record would suggest. or some would have us believe.

I completely agree with Algarve.

Haha I wasn't meaning to compare you to Clive, it's just his number one argument!

I agree with you Beckford missed a lot of chances but a lot of strikers do, but if you wanted anyone on the end of a chance in those 3 season or so you would've wanted Beckford, anyone in league one would've! No you can't base his season on that one goal against Bristol but the other 20+ played a massive part in our season! And was his time at Everton really that much of a failure? He played his part and scored some important goals, he was never going to be the star striker straight away, and they wouldn't have sold him if they hadnt have received such a ludicrous offer from Leicester

In the 2009/10 season the leagues top 5 scorer stats were as follows

Lambert 163 attempts 30 goals = average - 5.43 Assists - 12
Paynter 123 attempts 26 goals = average - 4.73 Assists - 6
Beckford 148 attempts 25 goals = average - 5.92 Assists - 5
Holt 121 attempts 24goals = average - 5.04 Assists - 11
Barnard 77 attempts 24 goals = average - 3.21 Assists - 2

Figures are only inclusive of league games.

So I believe that we became blinded by the Beckford hype at the time,
yes, he scored against Man U and that sealed him in many a persons mind as the greatest striker we have ever had.

Sadly he wasn't even the best in the third tier of football.

Haha you are forgiven mate!

If I could have had anyone in that league on the end of them chances I would have had Rickie Lambert.

At Everton he wasn;t a failure, and did better than I expected. But since then he has achieved nothing.

I think he was a good player at League 1 level and average player at championship level. Not outstanding at league 1 like his goal stats would suggest.

He should have scored more considering the chances he had

Beckfords penalty stats were very low, as he usually missed.

Ironically Becchio, the player with hooves and nicknamed carthorse, scored on average 1 goal every 4.13 attempts, and had an average assist rate of 5.6 over the seasons he played for us, of which two and a bit seasons were in the Championship.
