Liverpool got back to winning ways on Sunday evening with a victory away to Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League.

It was a rather nervy first half and Liverpool looked scrappy at times, conceding possession far too easily. But it was the visitors who opened the scoring just before the half hour mark. Steven Gerrard whipped in a corner from the left and Daniel Sturridge, attempting to head it in, saw it go in off his arm despite Sebastian Larsson's half-hearted attempt to clear it off the line.

Eight minutes later, Liverpool doubled their lead as Sturridge turned provider after he collected a brilliant long pass from Gerrard on the right. He slid it across the face of goal for Luis Suarez, making his first league appearance since April, to slot it in from close range.

Sunderland had some efforts but they were mostly long range, with Adam Johnson taking a couple of shots at goal when he found himself with a clear view of the target. Craig Gardner forced a great save from the foot of Simon Mignolet when he prodded it towards goal first time from a high ball over the Liverpool defence.

Seven minutes into the second half, Sunderland had real hope as they halved the deficit. Ki Sung-Yueng took a shot from long range which Mignolet could only parry, and Emanuele Giaccherini followed up the rebound.

The home crowd suddenly found their voice and Sunderland started to threaten more, and with Liverpool's worrying statistic of not scoring in the second half of any game this season their fans will have been very nervous. But Liverpool soon weathered the brief storm and settled down again, but they struggled to create an opening to find the crucial goal to kill the game off.

But in the end the important third goal came, as Mignolet started a counter attack by throwing it out to Suarez in his own half. He then found Sturridge on the left and he returned it to Suarez in the box and he swept it in.

The two goal winning margin means that Liverpool go up to second in the league, two points behind leaders Arsenal.

I'd rather have Johnson back than Coutinho

Well with Lucas out we will see Hendo in CM vs Palace.

Yeah, I'd hope that Kelly will come in vs palace.

Hendo had a poor game but he was out of position and playing vs his boyhood club....give him a break.

If any of the top teams put together a bit of a run of form this season they could be title contenders. It has been a weird season so far. We seem to say this every season, but this time everyone really is throwing points away. Arsenal are looking good at the moment but they normally falter midway through the season and drop off. I thought City would walk away with it to be honest but yesterday made me think again. Chelsea don't look that good even with Mourinho back, Tottenham look like they could be decent and United are just plain awful. Very interesting season ahead.

I don't think he had a terrible game he did a job, just the ball went to him a lot of the time and he did feck all with it, crossing was dire. We need better from our wide men, he is not suited there anyway in an attacking sense. Idk why Sterling isn't playing, Gerrard needs a rest now and then too imo, great ball today for Studge but he is looking slower and slower each game.

Vs Palace id put Sterling in at wing-back and then give Kelly a run out after.

3 at the back, wing-backs pushing on with Coutinho behind Suarez and Sturridge, sound very very good.

Kolo Toure, Gerrard and Suarez are fierce competitors and we need that in the side to keep the rest of the team focused.

Pleased to pick up the 3 points before Sunderland experience the new manager "lift".

Palace next, cannot take it easy. Lets keep it going.
