The blame lies squarely with the FA.
Until they are replaced with a group who have no hidden agenda, we will never achieve our potential.
They need to appoint a young, hungry manager who is his own man ( or woman ) and leave him to get on with it.
He will not be afraid to drop the so-called names and mould a group of players into a single unit, all playing for each other, and all in a system that they can work within.
This WC should have been the springboard for that, ALL the old guard retired - they have had many chances, and failed miserably - so blood the youngsters in all the friendlies and through this WC. They would have learned from this and, by the Euros in two years time, would have been looking like the real deal, much like Germany did not so long ago.
This current FA has no desire to do this, they are out of touch and out of date. Selling tickets and merchandise to part time fans - ie the Rooney is world class brigade! - is as far as the FA can think. Until the FA is overhauled/replaced, we will get more of the same, just like the last 40 years of dreary, safe, dull , predictable football played by over-the-hill has beens.
Who is to blame?

Wow! You really are bitter aren't you?
England lost two games, two games lost by a single goal, two games they could have won with a little bit of luck and a bit more enterprise.
For sure they wouldn't have won the World Cup and are far from an outstanding team but they certainly are nowhere near as bad as you and other naysayers are soiling their pants about.
I can't understand why some of you English always want to throw the baby out with the bathwater whenever things turn sour. You obviously had too too high an expectation to start with.
There definitely has to be some changes before the European Championship qualifiers begin but it has more to do with tactics and desire than it has with organization and preparation.
Chin up Sassenachs, things could be a lot worse....you could have a cross to bear like us Scots!!

I get what you are saying.
But you forget the press and the fans reaction.
This 'Get rid of the old gaurd and blood the youngsters,' was said time round, then when the youngsters came in 'They're not good enough,' 'Get rid,' then you have to look at the petition against Cleverley, the attack on Welbeck, and the reaction to how the younger players played in the recent friendlies to know, that whoever comes in, even if he is his own man, he will have to be backed by the FA. Especially against the onslaught of negative reactions to everything from the media and the fans.
The team isn't good enough right now. They do have potential and may achieve it. But just throwing in young players without some experienced players in there will cause the players to lose their heads in the long run as happened with the previous bunch.
I think England expects too much.

I expected us to lose, Im not too bothered about that! I would rather have seen us go out in some kind of glorious failure rather than with a whimper like that.
maybe we should bring back the home internationals with you lot? Always great games with plenty of passion!

What you say is true, the press are never happy!
I agree that just throwing young un in with no plan would be a disaster, that is why a very specific type of manager with an actual plan who could make it work is needed. Okay, it might go horribly wrong, but at least there would be a chance of it working. With the old manager/players/techniques we KNOW exactly what will happen. Surely it's time to try something different?

England needs an inspirational "home grown" manager who can start building the next world cup team as soon as the tournament in Brazil ends. Someone who is an innovator, a risk-taker and someone whom the players really WANT to play for! A new manager should be the top priority for the F.A.
Let this manager sort the player situation out as part of his first job duties.

Tyke,
You are almost as brilliant as me but not probably not as humble. Heads need to role, not just the manager's but some of the experts at the F.A.
There are still some fans who are in denial, however, this is an awful team with no leadership either on the field or on the sidelines. Roy looks like he is sitting on the Loo and appears somewhat bewildered.
Even if, by a long shot, England should advance they need an overhaul. As you said, get a "new hungry manager" and let him sort out the player issues!

I am working on my humility, but as you know, being this brilliant is hard to hide! Just a shame we are not in charge!

..."Tyke"....
Aye, maybe a return of the 'Auld Enemy' game might light a fire in English bellies again as I think the lack of this is a big part of why you lot perform so poorly at the World Cup.
English players in the EPL are pampered so much and paid so well that, to some, (and this has been proven many a time) an international match and/or getogether is more of an inconvenience than an honour.
In my opinion what you need is more players with the determination, desire and craving for success shown by the likes of John Terry, Jamie Carragher and Stuart Pearce. None of them blessed with a mountain of talent but none ever lacking in their appetite to be on the winning side no matter what level played.
Producing someone like Luis Suarez, Christiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi would also help!
