Lots has been made about Roy's tactics, the team, the selection, etc.
Was the selection wrong? Was the tactics wrong? Or was it down to England just not being good enough?
Some have mentioned they enjoyed the style but there was a lack of creativity in the final third.
So who would you have taken? How would you have played?
Because I don't really see how England would have done better with different tactics or players that were available.
The England team you would have taken

Oh and one of Barry or Carrick should have gone, personally I'd have picked Barry as I thought he'd a better season then Carrick but either player would have done a good job

actually, for that system, Barry and Carrick would have been a good combination but then you're going backwards in terms of age again!

No point looking at players who are approaching there mid 30s for this world cup. We already had Gerrard and Lampard going. Roy made the right call to try new players as well as young.
Had Cole been in team would we have defended better? Yes.
Would we have got out of group or won the cup? No.
Young guys have had the experience while some of the new older players like Baines you can see are not international class.
France 2016 no excuses for Roy. We must perform better.

Whatever happens in 2016 it will be Roy's last, thank god.

I would have taken Cole and Terry and played
Johnson-Cahill-Terry-Cole as a back 4
otherwise we got the squad right

Cole and Terry (who has retired) are not going to be around in 2016 so why take them when we have Gerrard and Lampard in squad.
In France 2016 there will be no Gerrard, Lampard, Cole or Terry. It's the end and luckily some new players have had the experience and the manager now knows that even some of them are not up to international standards.
The likes of Sterling, Shaw, Ox and Barkley need to make themselves available for the U21 Euro tournament next summer.

"Cole and Terry (who has retired) are not going to be around in 2016 so why take them"
because they're better than Jags and Baines?

They are better indeed but would we have got out of the group? I doubt it. Even if we did Columbia in these conditions would have taken us to the cleaners.

You're all missing the point then. If it's just a question of how many old people, England would be a more balanced team and squad with Cole and Terry instead of Gerrard and Lampard. This age excuse is a red herring and each to his own, I have no problem with Hodgson picking his squad - that's his job. But then don't bemoan bad defending, lack of leadership, bad organisation and a midfield that is constantly out of position.
In my opinion, the big mistake is Baines, he's a truly awful player for a system where defenders actually need some sort of positional sense. Johnson has no competition but Baines? You all talk about his attacking capabilities but he hasn't done that either. In fact, all I've seen at Everton is a full back who likes to take free kicks. Another overrated player.
I believe that with just one change, Cole for Baines, you wouldn't have lost the two matches - but this is just opinion as nobody has a crystal ball!

"but would we have got out of the group?"
crosses from that flank and mistakes from the centrebacks knocked us out of the tournament
probably
